Well they probably took advantage of that fact to gauge interest in their own game, as a lot of these things get cancelled before they are released, even when they're 100% complete. If someone, anyone is piggy backing on your creative but for some reason you're not sure about your own investments then by all means don't waste money on market research and teaser trailers and stuff, just let someone else do it. That's the price for unoriginal content in many forms, someone might sue you and that's how capitalism works, sadly.

It looks like Capcom did the same thing with the Resident Evil 2 demo someone made in Unreal.

I think it's OK with some things that don't get a lot (or any) love from the originators that fans make these things and they don't get shut down until the last minute, as then they are allowed to exist in some substantial form just not publicly so that the appetite for the genuine/priced article isn't eaten up when they launch. It's very, very hard to compete with free, especially when it's good! Not good news if you're already working on something as you're just wasting money. I think that shows quite a lot of respect for fans that it was allowed to be finished.

I think I might genuinely go for that special edition because the music is pretty fantastic. Especially Prime.

Wonder just how long this has been in development for. Even though its a remake its surely had to be built from scratch as its such an old game.

I really like the art style they've gone for there on the metroid. It's reminiscent of the Metroid Prime concept art.

Or they let them release it so people could actually play it before enforcing their IP claim. Its not that they are within their rights to take action, they have to take action, if they choose not to defend their IP then it can open the door to anyone making a Metroid game for any platform without Nintendo being involved at all.

I'm ecstatic we're finally getting a sidescrolling Metroid again, but I am gutted it is through low res 3DS visuals in 30fps...I'll likely still get it, but I'm doubtful I'll enjoy it as much as AM2R, given how much better that looked + performed. Will be interesting to compare the design of the two, both seem pretty daring in trying new things with the original game.

If nothing else, Metroidvanias are great on dual screens for obvious reasons, so at least it has that benefit on 3DS.

Remake of Metroid II and Metroid Prime 4.

Wasn't too impressed with the look of Nu-II in the video but it looks better being played on Treehouse, would have preferred a fully flat 2D new game, but this will do!
Also Prime 4 :datass: Probably not till 2020 though

I agree, some Amiibos look a bit basic to my eye but those Amiibos look genuinely nice. I love the metroid in particular.

Christ really? I think a lot of designers don't really understand why that kind of thing is important some times. Super Metroid ran at 60 FPS and to this day still remains the most emergent Metroid game due to the degree of control given to the player.

Samus has so many things in that game that they never used again in later metroid games, the sprint button being an obvious one. Nintendo don't know what to do with metroid games so they just attempt to refine the game play each time but every time they do that with a 3rd person metroid game they lose something from Super. Fusion was linear and stripped down for a handheld. Zero Mission was sleeker but again also stripped down slightly for the GBA, Other M is what it was. Compared to the effort gone into some other Nintendo games Metroid seems almost creatively bankrupted in its design by comparison.

When I look at this I just see them doing the same thing again. They are clearly trying to give players more "control" with the new aiming tools but it is done so at the expense of the flow, same with these special attacks. It looks more modern and sleek sure but I'm going to make the argument now that even with all these new things the combat will be no more emergent than super metroid (in fact considering all the things you can do in super it might actually be less emergent).

Aye, and it's frustrating seeing the pushback against folks pointing this out, lots of accusations of entitlement and "why are you complaining, we're getting a new Metroid!"...as if we shouldn't critique something we have interest in, and as though it's unreasonable to expect a level of fluidity seen throughout the series. Hell, I'm pretty sure Federation Force is the only non-60fps entry.

To put that another way...it's running at half the frame rate of the Game Boy original :/

That kind of thing is happening in fighting games at the moment as well actually. People are pointing out how gooseberry fool Marvel Vs Capcom Infinite looks but are getting shouted down by people saying the critics are "killing the fighting game community" because apparently if a company gives you a less than stellar product you should buy it anyway so the series doesn't "die" which is strawberry floating dumb because if you condone that then the games might as well not be made in the first place.

For this reason I'm fine with Nintendo not making new F-Zero games if they, by their own admission, have no where to go with it following GX.

Yup, exactly. You can be happy a dev is making a game in a series you like while also keeping the capacity for critique intact.
