I just got home from work, turned on the Nintendo Youtube stream and saw this. Thought it was Metroid Dread.

:(

Still, 2D Metroid!

So happy we're getting another Metroid in this style, though the QTEs/dev history/ low res 3DS visuals are admittedly a bit of a buzzkill. Also I hope to god it's 60fps

Well I actually liked Castlevania: Lords of Shadow – Mirror of Fate, I know some people had issues with it, but I don't think it'll be an issue with this.

Actually glad its on 3DS too.

I really like the 3D on 3DS and its been a while since a game like this came to 3DS, it also might be one of the last games I end up playing on 3DS.

I think it'll feel special on 3DS in a way I'm not sure it'd feel on Switch.

Next they need to remake Super Metroid - all hand-drawn animations, preferably.

Jupiter is in your sun sign this week, making it pretty crowded in there, what with Jupiter being the largest of the planets and all.

Nah, it doesn't need remaking. With this & Zero Mission I would say that's all of the series than needs upgrading. Those first two games have aged particularly poorly whereas Super hasn't at all.

Looks pretty good. I was dubious about Mercury Steam being involved, as they are a bit all over the place on quality, but I'm sure Nintendo guiding them through development will help.

Surely it could use sharpening up, though, right? Less pixelated, more sharp lines, etc?

No, Super Metroid I completed the other month for the first time and there was nothing wrong with it, only the movement was a little strained.

Having watched the Treehouse gameplay and knowing the metroid creator is involved, this is looking excellent. And I'm also glad it's on 3DS, because it gives you a persistent map view with markers and annotation capabilities, which is what Metroid game needs. Everyone keeps telling me Metroid II isn't impossibly hard if you play it with a map. Well here it is with a map and far superior presentation, and a modern faster and more fluid control and movement style. Also, ultimately Switch is a very expensive console and I won't be getting one anytime soon, whereas there are tens of millions of 3DS owners established. It's the perfect platform for a 2D Metroid game. It's probably the thing I'm most looking forward to besides Splatoon 2, Xenoblade 2 and Mario when I eventually get a Switch.

There was already a perfectly fine Metroid II remake out there but Nintendo decided to threaten its developers with legal action rather than saying "nice work, would you like to develop it further with our support".

This one doesn't look as good despite the 'superior' visuals.

Normally that would be a bit gooseberry fool. But to be fair, in this case they were actually making their own Metroid II remake, so it's not as if they shut them down and then ignored the IP. Plus AM2R is still out there if you look about. Nintendo have always been like this with their IP though. I'm just surprised they let AM2R get as far as it did.

Unfortunately unless you're literally incapable of making a good game with your franchise (Sega), you can't really do that as a corporate. "Hey go and make some games for us and if they're good we'll 100% pay to develop publish and promote it, putting the actual creators out of a job and pushing a Nintendo-developed game further and further into the depths of obscurity". Of course they're much more obligated to uphold their IP rights that they will lose otherwise and if they can make a Metroid game why shouldn't Nintendo do it?

So someone releases an HD version of Zelda/Mario that has already happened, Nintendo should close up those and not bother.. I know the M2 remake was looking pretty good but ultimately you're stuffing a load of sprites of redrawn character art and mostly 1:1 copying maps from an existing game and making it look nice with questionable fan remixes versus 2 of the original Metroid composers - I think this is pushing it a bit further than that. Of course it will be good if not better than a fan remake that will always exist on filesharing sites. I mean how badly can you strawberry float up a remake of an existing 2D game, can fans really do it better in their bedrooms?

I don't quite understand how it's bad or surprising when fan projects get shut down, they don't suddenly not exist or never happened, it's very easy to download and play them. You just can't have a website called "Metroid 2 Remake" and use all of Nintendo's art and IP and pretend like nothing is awry with that.

I'm aware Nintendo were well within their rights to take legal action but it just seems like they deliberately let the AM2R guy(s) get so far with the project just so they could prove a point.
