I wouldn't go far as to say it is better than any of the Prime games (I would say that it isn't, personally), but I really enjoyed Other M.

It was a change of pace after the three Prime games, which were a much slower, labourous beast.

As Herbi said, it was good to have a fast athletic Samus again after her being effectively a slow-walking tank in the Prime series.

While it would be nice to see a Prime game in HD and using the gamepad, we did have three Prime games in four years (2003-2007) so something different and more in the vein of the 2D games would be preferable.

And that is what Other M tried to be - it is very much like a 3D version of Fusion.

Personally, I didn't mind the weapon authorization. Let's face it, this Metroid so we know we will lose all our abilities and regain them, and to be honest the fact that it happens three times across the Prime games in various ways is contrived enough as well

The missle bits were okay - they traded off extra power and accuracy for lack of mobility and vulnerability. I imagine they implemented them to take advantage of wii mote aiming.

I can't remember how linear the game is, as I only played it once, but getting all the upgrades teased some exploration out of it.

Stupid having to work from home this evening, stopped me playing this tonight.

Dying to get a few more hours on it.

Which bit are you up to?

You're making me want to replay it - even though I went through all three of them last year.

Are you going to go through Corruption as well? It will be interesting to see what you think of it. It's big USP at the time were its controls (though it is still a solid game in its own right).

What about their variations, like past/future world gimmicks? I like those ones better.

There tends to be more imagination involved with them, but it can still be lazy design. At least you don't constantly take damage.

Done well, a light/dark world gimmick can actually take a lot of effort and imagination. You effectively have a game map that is twice the size and needs substantially reworking in order to not appear like you have just copied it wholesale.

With Echoes, they possibly went too far the other way - at times it doesn't feel like you are playing the same world mirrored, but just another area that you get to via those portal things. Only a few times can I remember really having to think about the same area in both its light and dark forms.

Link to the Past probably got it right - its worlds were enough alike that you could picture them both at once and overlay one on top of the other in your head.

I didn't really mind your health ticking down too. It dwindled fairly slow so it wasn't an immediate danger, but was something you were conscious of all the time. There were plenty of light bubble to recharge your health for a minute too.

It's more the beam swapping and ammo I found a bit laboursome.

I think it was you who posted this years ago around the time Echoes originally came out. I used to listen to it loads on my Sony Ericsson something or other at the time and associate the tune strongly with my first year at Uni.

Just a few days ago i was listening to Kanye West's version of Yellow Flicker Beat ('Flicker') and was thinking about remixes in general and remembered how fond i was of the Torvus remix, i thought; 'but i wonder how i'd ever find it again because i can't remember its title or anything'

And here you are and there it is.

Thanks! For then and now. :D

I want a new metroid

Just got the dark suit :datass: Should make traversing the dark world a bit better.

strawberry float me I was lost tonight, spent ages trying to figure out why I had 3 keys but couldn't find where they should go. It was in the dark world and I'd been there many times before :fp: Really wish you could place a map marker or annotate it somehow as there's loads of coloured doors that I should be able to pass with uncharted bits behind them but when you finally make it across the map you find there's something unmarked blocking the way. Wouldn't be so bad if I hadn't tried the same place over and over :x

Got a 3 part snake boss fight just before I was going to switch it off and had to do that plus then find a new save room.

Map issue aside I'm loving this :datass:

I wonder if Metroid would benefit from time travel....

I can understand why people wouldn't be big on Prime 2. I think Prime 2 does deserve a lot of praise simply for creating a really good example of an oppressive feeling game world, I'm not just talking about the dark world, I'm talking about enemies that are legitimately hard to kill for most of the game, the pirate troops that randomly teleport in and attack you, those dinosaur things that scared the gooseberry fool out of me when I was in the water and saw one swim at me through the fog. It's a very oppressive game, it is out to get you and that is why I love it in hindsight because it gives the feeling of being submissive to a game that is about empowerment.

You'll be glad to get out. Fantastic score, though, except for the Dark world. I always found the Dark Aether music to be lacking.

Respawning space pirates along with that bloody music :fp:

I try to skip enemies like that unless I'm forced to fight them as taking time to beat them is wasted when you go out of a door to return 30 seconds later and they're all back.

The "attack" music in mp games is so good at making you feel "oh strawberry float off".

"It should be common sense to just accept the message Nintendo are sending out through their actions."

I love that tune. Stemage's remix of it is godly.
