Paid content in videogames (DLC, loot boxes, passes, currencies, "surprise mechanics" and - new! - pay more or wait!)

Anything to do with games at all.

Could be one of 'em, Dan. Big publishers keep on coming up with new "surprises" .

With long running threads like this it's always sad to look back at the first page at members who aren't active any more

RIP jawafour :(

NetherRealm have updated their Mortal Kombat 11 game... by adding banner adverts for the Hogwart's Legacy game. I can't quite a imagine a least likely crossover. Dat immersion :datass: .

Is this scummy in-game advertising - even in expensive full-price games - gonna become a thing now?

Now I really want a Harry Potter/Mortal Kombat crossover to happen.

And not in the way they wimped out with Injustice, I want the full Mortal Kombat experience.

Eurogamer has reported that Sega has said that they are "keeping an eye on market conditions" in terms of raising their game prices to the $69.99 (£69.99) price point.

As usual, I guess this means that they'll be raising their prices to this new "standard".

Nintendo take a bit of a kicking from YouTuber RGT 85 in this vid... and I reckon the guy makes a good point.

Why close down Pac-Man 99 after just two years? Especially when people have paid real-world money to purchase DLC. It sets a bad impression; Nintendo closed Mario 35 (albeit no DLC for that title) and now Pac. why would you now spend money on DLC for any future games that Nintendo add to the Nintendo Online service? There is a decent chance that the game could fairly quickly be closed and you won't have access to all of the stuff that you paid for.

I assumed Pac 99 was a Namco Bandai thing, is it not?

Yeah, it is published by Bandai Namco, Pedz; but Nintendo are the guys who made it available via the Nintendo Online paid subscription service. I get that it's likely that a deal has come to the end (whether Nintendo want to pay less or Bandai Namco want to be paid more for continuing the arrangement... who knows?) but it sucks for those folk who purchased the DLC. Or even just want to play the game for a while longer!

Can't wait to play an imagining of the tale of Gollum where he doesn't say "precious" or make that gollum gulping noise that gave him his name, simply because I didn't preorder it.

Eurogamer is reporting that "Xbox has discusssed (sic) "timed slices" and games with ads internally, to offer different monetisation methods to developers."

Sarah Bond, corporate vice president for game creator experience and ecosystem at Xbox wrote:We've talked about how we're experimenting with other models, like what does it mean for advertising in games which is more prevalent in mobile – are there models of that that work well in PC and console? Are there other models where you might have timed slices of games and stuff like that?

In-game ads are gonna be a thing, aren't they? :dread: .

Product placement has always been a thing, but watching actual ads like, on loading screens or whatever, is too far for me. I simply won't play any of those games.

Yeah, I think that in-game adverts in already-expensive games would be a move that would stop me wanting to buy them.

Yet again, we'll end up with the cracked pirate versions being superior, because they won't be making constant calls to the ad server as well.

I'm fine with games having things like billboards in cities showing real life adverts.

They can strawberry float off if they think it's ok to show adverts during loading screens though.

They'll spin this into "choice for the customer", I reckon:

2023: "We need to include in-game adverts in our £70 games because of the cost of making them."
2024: "Pay an optional £80 to get the advert-free Edition!"

Holy gooseberry fool, it's worse than I thought

Those prices are more than I'd pay for a full game, for some DLC. £52 for an emote pack, £52 for some alternate VO, and £52 for the kind of in game encyclopedia that most in game menus are already bloated with anyway, and is likely just the Silmarillion paraphrased. Outrageous.

I had initially been looking forward to this game, but absolutely swerving from it as fast as possible now.
