The president of the ESA defends lootboxes, surprising nobody.

An industry lobbying group sockpuppet wrote:the effort to regulate them as a form of gambling "challenges our industry's freedom to innovate, and impairs our ability to continuously test new business models, which drive creativity and engagement with our audience."

Valve pull trading csgo and dota 2 items from the Netherlands, will still sell people lootboxes though

It'll be interesting to see how EA react now - although Valve are still raking it in though.

Star Citizen :dread:

I think there's another really big issue with lootboxes and dlc, especially as gaming moves to mobile platforms, which is the problem that the temptation is so close by.

A friend of mine had a gambling addiction which he was able to beat a few years ago and one of the big reasons for that I think was that it was fairly easy for him to avoid going to a casino as it's this big physical place. On the other hand I remember another friend told me he spent over $6000 on DLC for some game, I think Warframe, I'm not sure.

Imagine how much harder it is for people to break these kinds of addictions when the portal through which you do it is so close by, and in cases like a cell phone or computer, can't just be avoided as they need them for work and such.

Forza 7 has taken cars out of their loot boxes and by December they'll be taken out entirely (apparently they were so integrated they have to re-balance the game)

Interestingly, they never ever pushed the button on having them monetized, they were bought only with in-game currency. Still good that they pulling them out tho, no doubt hesitant after the SoW and BF2 debacle.

Good. I had been holding off putting any money down for Horizon 4 because I was waiting for information about the lootbox/microtransactions, which normally sneaks out quietly after the initial reveal/preorder window.

Paid loot boxes removed from Overwatch and Heroes of the Storm in Belgium.

I thought the loot boxes haven't been completely removed, just the ability to purchase them with real money.
You can still earn loot boxes through gameplay.

Added the word paid to the text. He does say all that in the video though.
