Paid content in videogames (DLC, loot boxes, passes, currencies, "surprise mechanics" and - new! - pay more or wait!)

Anything to do with games at all.

David Davis strikes me as the kind of man who "hammers it out" into a "loot box" he keeps in his fridge.

I'd hold fire for a bit, read the headline carefully: Belgium says loot boxes are gambling, wants them banned in Europe

I can't imagine David Davis hammering out lootbox policy at the negotiating table late into the night.

His reaction would go something like this:

“Europe wants to ban lootboxes? Like pirates would have? Do we still have pirates? Why are Europe not attacking the damn pirates? Does Europe have no ships capable? This is why we need to leave and spend our money capturing pirate lootboxes! I had SAS (reserve) training you know, I could personally capture more pirate lootboxes than the whole of Europe put together!”

Does that require the fun to have started in the first place?

Over in Australia, Victoria's gambling regulator says loot boxes are gambling:

I know, i was linking that to the implication that there is no fun in nfs payback to begin with.

Here we are with EA Sports UFC 3 which, according to the beta reports, is revolving around microtransactions to an absurd degree.

The thing about Fifa is that it's perfectly possible to play it with out getting involved with all the lootbox stuff. My understanding is that as soon as you want to play any kind of multiplayer Battlefront 2 stuff you have to get involved with the lootboxes.

Users should at least be given the choice of a non loot boxes centred multiplayer option. Like, they could have done a system where you play a movie themed scenario multiplayer without lootboxes and a full on everything goes lootbox bonanza mode.

Amusement under late capitalism is the prolongation of work.

Yeah I agree with that. The ultimate team mode in FIFA is not something I have ever bothered with and have no need to ever touch as they have single player and multiplayer modes that don’t need the microtransaction bollocks.

Speaking with Nikkei Asia, Sony’s head of corporate planning Kazuhiko Takeda noted that the platform holder’s business model involves "working to get more customers paying continuously for content”.

We are moving towards a time when “buying” and “owning” a videogame will not really exist. We’ll pay-to-play and never actually have the game ourselves.

Hes not wrong but those times are here with things like Hearthstone and Dota, you dont own the game, you buy cards, costumes, skins etc if you want them, if you dont then you can keep your money in your pocket and play away just fine. The problem with what EA (and others) are doing is theyre charging up front for a game and on top of that they have a broken progression system that reiles on the player making a massive time commitment or sinking more money into it to do the stuff they want to do with it. If Battlefront and the other big offenders had been given away for free and the only charges were for loot boxes or currency or whatever then there likely would not have been a huge problem with paying for that stuff, the progression would still have been shitty but at least people would not have felt absolutely cheated by the game.

I dont think anyone can object to companies "working to get more customers paying continuously for content”, that just makes good business sense, the problems arise when the system put in place is massively unfair and designed to get people paying at every turn.

Those of us that just want to buy a game and play it will object. I don’t care if it is a good business decision for the developer/publisher, I don’t want to be playing all games on a subscription or microtransaction basis. It suits some games and some game modes, but it will be a sad day if it ever becomes the standard.

Very true, I dont think it should ever become the standard, there are definitely situations where it doesnt suit but I can understand why companies do it and will continue to look for new ways to get consumers to stump up for things. I think a good example of this is Minecraft, I bought the game and never spent a penny on microtransactions, there are skins and texture packs and servers and all kinds of things you can buy in that game but all of it is totally optional, if you want to just mine and craft then everything you need is right there in the game for you. I know Minecraft was incredibly popular before all of that stuff was added in but I think the way it was all handled and made entirely optional is a good example of how optional microtransactions can be done in a way that will not impact the main game.
