Bingo, plus it puts moneys in MS's coffers on any platform.

That's CFN. Cross-platform play isn't like playing on PSN or XBL. The devs basically have to build their own network and the console networks plug into that.

For Portal 2 Valve had to come up with a way to make your Steam friends list coexist with your PSN one, and allow you to message others.
SFV and FFXIV use their own network IDs and friends lists in game that don't relate to the PSN one.
Rocket League doesn't let you message other platforms and it uses your console friends list, but everyone plays on the same dedicated servers, and you can make private rooms to play with your PC friends.

Each of these networks are different, and owned by the developers.

Oh I see, so, technically could a game come out and be cross play between PS4 and X1 without Sony's consent?

A multitude of non-GFWL/Win10 PC networks (Rocket League, Final Fantasy XIV, Steam, CFN)

DC Universe on PS3/PS4/PC FFXI, Phantasy Star Universe were cross platform on PS2/PC.

Is Helldivers cross platform?

Helldivers isn't, and PS2 didn't really have a "network", so to speak. Just a means to connect to "the internet". The difference between PS2's online and PSN is why we never saw FFXI on PS3 after it came out on Xbox.

Theoretically yes, Sony would OK the link between PSN and the devs network, and that network would also connect to XBLive as a sort of bridge. Sony and MS dont need t o talk directly as the devs network is sat in the middle.

No, they'd still need to say it's okay, which is why Psyonix haven't just straight-up announced it as that yet. But they'd have a hard time saying no now when existing titles have set a precedent for cross-network multiplayer.

They little to gain or lose so they may say no.

Microsoft are doing some crazy ass sh*t this gen, The Backwards Compat for free and now potential cross play. MCC to launch on PC with cross play would be great, so, does Gears UE work across pc and Windows?

I don't think so. Killer Instinct will with season 3.

But that'll be Windows 10 only, right? Meaning it's still just within their Xbox Live network (like how XBL/GFWL games in the past were)

I think this is different. With those devices, you don't tend to give a gooseberry fool what other people use. For the XBO and PS4 it is all about keeping userbase, being able to play games with people on a different console is one less reason to own a specific console. I cannot see any advantage MS will get from this, only less reasons for people to own an XBO.

Yes?

Isn't that the same now though, whichever platform you buy it on, MS get the money. Unless of course they try to add a WOW subscription type service, but even then you don't need to open up your network for that.

Yes?

It's the other way around when you're trailing. If most people are buying into the other network, your own network that doesn't work with theirs is a reason to not buy your system.

Ofcourse, I will be happy if MS exit the home console scene, which will then allow Nintendo to fight it out with Sony. This is my dream.

I'm as nostalgic for the 90s as you are, but it's best for the industry to always have 3 competitors.

Imagine if this generation was just Xbox One vs Wii U :?

On the topic of FFXIV, wasn't the reason it's not on Xbone not necessarily because of cross-platform issues but because SE thought it was bullshit that you'd have to pay for Live AND the sub to play and neither side would drop it?

PC has cross-play with PlayStation via Steam/PSN already. If Microsoft want to get in on that party I hope it's done on Sony and Valve's terms, because everything MS touch on PC turns to shite.

Yeah, my worry with a MS helmed agreement is that it would be heavily biased for them, would fall through and everyone would be soured.

I want to be proven wrong because this is the perfect outcome for consumers.

Death's Head wrote:I'll believe it when I see it. Struggling to think of any reason why MS would want XBO players to play against people on PS4s. One of the things helping to keep the XBO in the running is that if your mates have a XBO you will need to buy one so you can play with them. Letting people with an XBO play with people on a PS4 erodes this.

Last gen that worked, but PS4s are flying off the shelves. Sony has the larger share and everyone of those is more likely to convert somebody else in to another PS4 sale

That's less likely to happen if you can play with your friend who has a PS4 with an X1.

And for that reason Sony won't let the Rocket League players on PS4 and Steam to play with the people on X1 and Windows 10
