...Declares 2nd Place

Microsoft has finally fessed up--Nintendo's Wii has won this generational battle in the console wars.

In a reversal of its "we're winning if you don't count the Wii" policy, the company behind the Xbox 360 has acknowledged the success of Nintendo's sold-out, remote-waggling wonder box and instead declared victory over rival Sony and its PlayStation 3.

In his best PR voice, Microsoft VP Don Mattick told BusinessWeek, "I'm not at a point where I can say we're going to beat Nintendo ... [but] we will sell more consoles this generation than Sony."

As of March of this year, worldwide console sales are listed below. Since then, the Wii has come close to 30 million sold and the PS3 has topped 14 million, but Microsoft has not released numbers for the same period.

1. Wii - 24.45 million units
2. Xbox 360 - 19 million units
3. PlayStation 3 - 12.85 million units

The Wii hasn't won yet. You never know, people might get sick of playing big brain academy and bloody Wii Fit

Christ, I thought they were UK figures! I thought Nintendo must be kicking the strawberry floating ceiling with joy!

Still, pretty awesome for worldwide sales too.

To be honest, it's hardly suprising.

With the Wii selling like it is already, and still going strong with good Casual and Core titles planned for the future, the Wii's sales won't let up for a long time. It's still sold out in various places. To be quite honest, Nintendo did take the Wii in the right direction, although many people disagree. After the Gamecube it was quite possible that Nintendo was going to go the way of Sega.

It pretty much has though. It's still selling massively, and while it may slow down eventually Microsoft or Sony for that matter have no chance of catching up. Microsoft wouldn't have said this otherwise.

Then they can move onto the rest of the games, like Mario Galaxy, Twilight Princess, Metroid Prime 3, No More Heroes, Boom Blox, Smash Bros Brawl, Trauma Centre and The Conduit.

but it still has millions of sales over its competition in terms of console sales.
Personally if i got a wii there is only about 5 games i would want for it, all the multiplatform games look gooseberry fool imo.

In a way he is right, the only way for the XBOX® 360™ to contend with the Wii is when it has much lower specs. At the moment the Wii is contending with the XBOX®, PlayStation 2® and the Gamecube™. Of the course the PlayStation®2 is winning that generation and all those profits belong to the PlayStation®3 too because of backward compatibility.

Now back to the present day. This generation is between the XBOX® 360™ and the PlayStation®3, however the victory is in Sony™'s bag. The majority of the XBOX® 360™s have contracted the Red Ring of Death™ virus. A strategy thought up by Sony™ from the very beginning.

Our survey says that, most of them got sick of Wii Fit after the first time they played it.

I feel sorry for Microsoft but have a lot (a little) admiration (er..respect) for what they've done with both the X-Box and X-Box 360. Aside from all the FPS's and REALISTIC racing games. They'd put a lot of effort into all areas and almost done no wrong, while losing money, and the wii has come along with a waggle stick.

CONTINUED

I feel sorry for them because it's like they've sacrificied profit in order to entertain people, something Nintendo could learn from, Nintendo, learn from, Nintendo.

edit: ah, just remembered about the whole X-Box 360's dieing a young death thing.

I don't have one. :D

Well, not really.

Weren't Sega basically hemorrhaging money since the Saturn era?

Nintendo have always managed to remain profitable (mainly thanks to handhelds/Pokemon, but their consoles did make them money). They might have wondered if producing their own hardware was worth all the effort, but I doubt they seriously considered throwing in the towel.

If the follow up to the Gamecube had done even worse than the GC (which it could have had they not changed strategy) then they may have considered giving up on producing their own home consoles. I doubt they thought about it much after last gen though.
