Jim Sterling made a great video about this. (Skip to 1:10 to pass by the skit opening.)

This is basically MS next shot st steam.Although from the sounds of things they may actually be getting ready to turn the w box into some kind of steam machine type deal.

My worry is that it'll make ms more likely to delay releasing tech for full windows apps.

Amusement under late capitalism is the prolongation of work.

From the lastest Rise of the Tomb Raider patch.

Adds NVIDIA VXAO Ambient Occlusion technology. This is the world’s most advanced real-time AO solution, specifically developed for NVIDIA Maxwell hardware. (Steam Only)

Doesn't work on the windows store version because of the ridiculous limitations MS have put in place. MS are holding back the version of Rise on their store yet it costs the same as steam.

Apparently the Windows Store version doesn't support Direct X 12

Was gutted the remaster for Gears was Windows Store only, didn't even know it had been released. Can't even get a high seas copy just to see if it would play on my laptop or not. Downloaded a pirate copy of the original Gears 1 which actually works unlike my genuine disc copy :fp:

Unless they actually block normal game installations this poses no realistic threat. So far all the UWA games have been inferior versions so Steam and GOG will wipe the floor with them. Gamers are not going to suddenly change their buying habits in order to purchase versions of games that are actually inferior.

It's Games for Windows all over again.

Except that some games are or will be exclusive to the windows 10 store; killer instinct, gears, forza etc. I may as well stick with the xbone for them seeing as how restrictive its going to be.

The one thing that'd make me think Microsoft are going to take this criticism on board is that they been making a lot of effort overall to be a more open company. SQL server was released on Linux last week and while it doesn't mean a huge amount to me I'm reliably informed by our IT manager that the very idea of such a thing happening a few years ago was beyond laughable.

The whole Windows Store experience is Windows 10s biggest weakness by far but the fact Microsoft are actually putting money into programs delivered through the store should mean they are much more aware of its weaknesses than they were GFWs and even the Windows 8 store. Forza is launching without proper steering wheel support but the plan at least is that Turn 10 will bring wheel support to the UWA platform which would then help everyone making a racing game for Windows 10. If Forza wasn't on Windows the incentive to fix that problem simply wouldn't exist.
