Is there a free (legal) version of Microsoft Outlook available? Or some equivalent?

It used to be Outlook Express, now you can use Windows Live Mail to do pretty much the same thing.

I find Mozilla Thunderbird to be the superior product, though.

Outlook includes a plethora of organisation tools.. Express became Windows Mail which was replaced with Windows Live Mail which is really just for reading Hotmail accounts.

Surely that's not true seeing as its now the only free Microsoft e-mail client as Windows 7 does not come with an e-mail client windows XP did With Outlook Express 6/7 and Vista with Windows Mail.

Windows Live Mail is the replacement as it comes under their new Windows Live theme with various other programs

Edit From Wiki:

Windows Live Mail (formerly named Windows Live Mail Desktop, code-named Elroy[1]) is an e-mail client from Microsoft's Windows Live set of products. It is intended to be a successor for Outlook Express on Windows XP and Windows Mail on Windows Vista.

Sorry, it's a generic e-mail client that will work with POP/IMAP/SMTP etc.. I mean to say it is clearly intended to host Hotmail accounts as part of the whole MSN/Live service.
