Apparently Microsoft is looking at launching a disc-less Xbox One console next year; possibly at circa £150, as reported by Eurogamer.

In addition:

For those potential buyers with existing physical Xbox media, Microsoft is said to be considering a "disc-to-digital" programme, which will enable purchasers to trade their physical games in return for a digital download at participating retailers.

Microsoft is reportedly also yet to decide if its next-gen Scarlett console will include a disc-drive.

I can see discs being an "extra" option for the launch of next gen consoles. I think that I'd be ready to go disc-less; not totally willingly but, this gen, I feel that discs have gradually been relegated to being physical download keys anyway.

Good news, I hope next gen launches with a cheaper diskless version.

While a few will undoubtedly argue that for some BB speeds aren't good enough across the board for such a future I would argue, (as I did the other day), that, given the sheer size of day-one downloads for a lot of new games even with a disc, the industry, particularly publishers, aren't overly concerned how fast gamers BB connections are.

Any idea how much the UHD Blu-ray drive costs per unit?

Around $77 could be saved by building a disc-less model, according to the report.

I've already gone all-digital this gen so I'd be fine with a console without a disc drive, especially if it knocks the price down a bit.

I'd guess they'll have a console with a disc drive and one without for next gen, as plenty of people are still buying physical games either by preference or because of internet issues.

Jesus, yeah for people who go digital only anyway that's just a waste.

I could see something like this doing quite well in Europe, though less so in the USA where the internet infrastructure just isn't there to support it in most places.

Nice to have options re disc-less console. Red Dead 2 was the 1st game I'd brought on disc since Gears 5. Sounds like this will be ideal for XCloud if they offer that option for the XB1 family.

It'll be interesting to see just how much more compact it is compared to the drive model. Will we be talking Apple TV sized?

People who have gone console digital, how do you justify it to yourselves paying £60 for a brand new release?

I’d more open to disc-less future if the price adjusted accordingly.

Disc-free. Games starting to take up 100GB+. I hope they're prepared to include 5TB+ hard drives in these things, or at least make swapping out the stock HDD a quick and easy process.

To be fair if you wait you can be get stuff for less, the stores cost more but you can buy the codes from the likes of cd keys slot of the time, plusnthere are sales and things.

What's to justify? Clearly spending £60 for a digital new release is well within their disposable income. If it weren't then I'd imagune they'd always buy physical or wait for a price drop.

Willingly spending more for arguably less (no resale value) is telling the people setting the prices that they're actually perfectly fine, but that's obviously not the case. Just because they can afford them doesn't mean they should buy them.

Go for whatever's cheapest. Usually it's a disk, and, unless it's an online title or some big stupid sandbox, you can sell it on once you're finished.

I think those people trading in all their disks for a rental agreement are going to regret it in 20 years.

The Microsoft GamePass at least makes their own titles, and a number of third party titles, much better value than purchasing outright.

Digital tends to work best overall when you’re not interested in purchasing games at launch. More recently games have been cheaper digitally (Shadow Of The Tomb Raider for example is already £27.50) but there’s no reselling opportunities.
