I’d more open to disc-less future if the price adjusted accordingly.

Totally agree. Take out manufacture, distribution and retailer cut and they should be half the price.

That's what I was hoping would happen when this all started as surely they would pass on the cost reductions due to less processing and zero packaging but we're paying more for less which is just silly.
I've only bought digital games where I have no alternative or in the rare event it's cheaper.

Don't they keep the digital prices high to avoid pissing off retailers who would just refuse to stock the hardware if they were drastically undercut on the software?

Aren't a significant chunk of hardware sales still from brick and mortar retailers though? That's potentially a lot of sales being missed out on by Microsoft/Sony/Nintendo if they try to undercut game prices on their digital storefronts. They may not make much, if any, profit from those console sales but they're important for getting consoles into people's hands.

TB or so would do as you can uninstall stuff you don't want to store all the time, then install it again later when you want it.

That's not how I roll

Next gen a game will be 10TB each.

Enjoy that when the servers get turned off.

And when will this mass shutting down of servers happen exactly?

What I mean is I keep seeing this argument all the time, as if the moment we move to a disc-less environment all these servers are going to suddenly shut down with in 12 months or something and we'll never be able to play video games again. Ever.

I doubt MS will shut down their cloud servers any time soon, they're used for far more than just Xbox.

Discs and consoles aren't going to survive forever anyway.

But what if I want to buy a Forza Horizon game more than 2 years after it's launched?

Discs haven't gone away. Both discs and digital can coexist like with movies if there is demand for it.

No one seems to have that worry about steam.

Amazing isn't it, in the console world download only is met with arguments of well they will just shut stuff down and ooooh it will just cost all the money, despite the pc world pricing quite the opposite that when you go hard into download only

Not on a disc-less console, as per the thread subject.

Buy the disc, take it to the shop for download copy?

Do you often contemplate the complexity of life?

Go to any gaming site and it's always the same tired, paranoid, worst case scenario frothing from the console crowd about how console gaming will come crashing down around our ears EVERY TIME a disc-less future comes up in an article and/or discussion.

I think that epitomises Resetera about life in general, tbh.

I don't think they could make storage expansion much easier than the current Xbox method.

Also, how many games do you need installed at once?

I always find it weird that the forum is full of threads about but having time to game, massive backlogs, etc yet when a diskless future is suggested everyone must have access to 40 games at a time or what's the point.

More people need to move house to appreciate how good but having disks could be.

1. I'm just going by what the console gaming industry has shown us. Nintendo is shutting down the Wii eShop in January, thus any games that were purchased digitally will not be able to be re-downloaded. Online multiplayer servers for several games on all platforms have been shut down, so forgive me if I don't have unwavering faith that access to purchased content won't be removed at some point.
2. If the console gaming industry thinks it has a chance to wean us off physical games, whilst keeping the prices the same as before (i.e. £50-ish), it bloody well will try to. We've already got digital deluxe editions that are pushing towards £100, with no physical equivalent, so I wouldn't be surprised if they stayed the same price after discs are gone.

Thousands of games are availble to download across PC and consoles with a massive percentage of those being games spanning the last two decades, and on PC hundreds of titles dating as far back the 80's remain readily available and yet several online multiplayer servers being switched off equates to "the bleak and definite future of a digital only market place".

Get some perspective, man.

Yeah, to re-purchase. Plus, it's not all games. Say I buy a game now, digitally, on PS4. In 20 years (or however long) the PS4 store goes down. If I don't happen to have it installed on my PS4 at the time, or backed up, I lose access to it. It may appear on newer stores, but I could very well have to pay again for it. That's not really "owning" a copy of it, is it?
