gooseberry fool, that's really annoying. Worst thing I've had like that was when my son deleted both saves (mine and my daughter's) from Kirby Triple Deluxe. She'd found tonnes of the keychains too. :(

Minecraft featured heavily in this year's Sick Kids Save Point, one team even went so far as to build the entire Sick Kids Hospital over the course of their 24 hours. IN SURVIVAL MODE

Pretty awesome build!

I got the minecrafting a week or so ago.

I never really looked into it before, didn't think it would be my thing, seemed tedious as strawberry float mining and such.

But, I got it on the PS4, and I have to say it's a lovely little game to get lost in.

building some random stuff at the mo, plan actually to take some old lego castles and try to reproduce them in minecraft.

Very easy to get lost in, I start doing something, and 3 hours later i'm still there :fp:

I don't know, kinda makes sense to me. Those Minecraft lore and story books seem to be pretty popular and I don't think many developers would pass up on the opportunity to put their own spin on one of the biggest franchises in gaming. If it's done well I could see it being a big hit with kids.

Notch has bought a new house in Beverly Hills, California. It seems pretty nice and it looks like it may have space for a games room.

Yeah I read that Notch story. Apparently it's the most luxurious place in Hollywood Hills and Jay-Z and Beyonce had their heart set on it but Notch outbid them. Paupers!

Is it just me? why would anyone want a house like that?

I would prefer to put some effort in, you know design and create my own home not have some prefab with no personality you know, just like my Minecraft mud house.

This post is exempt from the No Context Thread.

I'd be perfectly happy living in a one bedroomed flat, having a house that huge seems pointless.

It is regenerated every few hours automatically so should always be fairly recent.

Verge impressions of Minecraft on HoloLens -

Image

Minecraft IRL

by Dieter Bohn

By far, the most impressive demo for my money was the Minecraft demo — though Microsoft called it something like "Building Blocks" or somesuch, presumably so as not to fully commit to releasing a full holograph version of Minecraft. But before we could enter this virtual world — actually, the virtual enters our world — we had to strap on the development unit for the HoloLens.

It's a contraption, to be sure. There's a small, heavy block you hang around your neck which contains all the computing power. It's comprised of lenses and tiny projectors and motion sensors and speakers (or something that makes sound, anyway) and god knows what else. And then, there's a screen right there in your field of view.

A "screen in your field of view" is the right way to think about HoloLens, too. It's immersive, but not nearly as much as proper virtual reality is. You still see the real world around in between the virtual objects, you can see where the magic holograph world ends and your peripheral vision begins.

But before you can apply your jaded "I've done VR before" attitude to this situation, you look down at the coffee table and there's a castle sitting right on the damn thing. It's not shimmery, but it's not quite real either. It's just sitting there, perfectly flat on the table, reacting in space to your head movements as lifelike as the actual table. There's no lag at all, it's simply magic.

And you definitely have a big stupid grin on your face even through the contraption that's strapped to it is pressing your eyeglasses into the bridge of your nose in a painful way.

Then it's demo time, you lean how a "glance" is just you looking at things and pointing your reticle at them and an "AirTap" is the equivalent of clicking your mouse. You can't touch anything, but you can look and point a little circle at objects on it by moving your head around. The demo involves digging Minecraft holes and blowing up Minecraft zombies with Minecraft TNT. It's basically incredible to see these digital things in real space.

You blow up a hole in the table and then you can look through it to more digital objects on the floor. You blow up a hole in the wall and tiny bats fly out and you see that behind your very normal plan wall is a virtual hellscape of lava and rock. You peer into the hole, around the corner, and see that dark realm extend far into space.

And then the demo's over.

Minecraft — more than anything else — could make HoloLens a hit, and here's why

Minecraft could be the FreeCell of HoloLens

How do you guarantee thousands of early adopters for your batty, futuristic augmented reality headset? You promise a chance to enter the world of the most popular video game on the planet. Today, Microsoft announced HoloLens, an augmented reality headset that will fill your home with hovering weather updates and virtual flat screen TVs, but the standout moment of the demonstration involved a man chipping away at the real world and entering the land of Minecraft.

Microsoft acquired Minecraft and its studio, Mojang, in November of last year for a reported $2.5 billion. (Around the same time, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick saw a presentation of Microsoft's augmented reality technology.) Many critics questioned the high price tag, particularly with the creator of Minecraft departing the company. Now Microsoft's reasoning for the purchase is clear: it has control of a nearly perfect killer app.

Minecraft is available on practically anything with a screen, and while you might expect that to mean the various versions cannibalize one another, the opposite is true. In June of last year, the game's console sales nearly matched home computer sales, with 15 million PC / Mac units, 12 Million Xbox 360 units, and 1.5 million PlayStation 3 units. On mobile, it had sold an estimated 21 million copies. Since then, the game has been available on more hardware, including the Xbox One. As of publishing this piece, the PC / Mac version of the game has been purchased over 18 million times — 9,506 times in the last 24 hours alone. Unlike the vast majority of video games, Minecraft's popularity only seems to grow.

But what makes Minecraft an ideal killer app for a virtual reality headset, or any hardware frankly, is the simplicity of its design and the clarity of its purpose. It doesn't require fast reflexes, complex controls, or expensive development to produce elaborate visuals. It's familiar; it's a planet-sized LEGO set. Newcomers won't be intimidated by the game — if anything they'll be familiar with it. And developers will be able to port the game on the impossibly short timelines required of Day One releases on new platforms.

So Minecraft has a huge audience, and it's comparably easy to develop, but here's its big potential: Minecraft could help new users of virtual and augmented reality headsets feel comfortable in three-dimensional space. And that's essential.

There's an urban legend, or maybe it's true, that Microsoft kept the FreeCell experiment in Windows, because it helped new users grow accustomed to using a mouse to communicate with a two-dimensional screen. Remember, what's obvious to us now was, at one point, both miraculous and utterly confusing. Low stress games like chess and FreeCell gave users a fun, relaxing place to inadvertently learn how to better use the Windows interface.

Minecraft could be the FreeCell of augmented reality, or more specifically, HoloLens. Should Microsoft include it pre-installed on every headset, both fans of the game and first-time users will have the opportunity to learn how to engage with its "holographic" objects in a way familiar to practically every child: playing with blocks.

Microsoft's acquisition of Mojang and Minecraft was the singular most expensive purchase of what accounts for a single license. But if it helps to establish of a firm base of early adopters and makes the unquestionably (for the moment) strange experience of wagging your arms in the air while wearing futuristic goggles feel natural, or at least fun, it will have been worth every penny.

And if it doesn't? It still has Minecraft, a game that practically sells itself.

Progress here: http://webmap.errkal.co.uk/#/78/64/545/max/0/0

Not been doing much recently with Red Stone but I'm sure I will think of something that needs a billions blocks removing and hours or red stone wire laying :D
