Make Shears asap, shear some sheep for wool to make a bed, block yourself from outside world for the night and the bed will be your respawn point and you’ll sleep till next morning. Alternatively just stay inside till morning, use a window 1 block gap to tell when it’s day.

Night brings monsters, all dark spawns mobs (Minecraft monsters) so underground is the same, light up with torches as you go.

Other than that you’re free to go wherever, there’s lots to explore, villages with NPC’s and a million other things.

Cool, if I get that initial part done to get the spawn point, it should be fine for a 5 year old to play about with it shouldn't it? With me helping.

Theres a creative mode that gives you access to every block in the game and means you cant die for if they want to just build stuff. Theres a peaceful mode that is survival (you have to find your own blocks, food etc) but turns off monster spawning so the chance of dying is reduced, you coudl still fall or get stuck in lava or something but its a much more relaxed than standard. You dont need any DLC, its a full game out of the box and there is shitloads to do, I have never bought any DLC for it and I never will. Theres as much depth to it as you want, you can just wander around, build some random things and have a great time or you can get stuck into building all kinds of farms, upgrade your gear, brew potions, enchant items, all sorts of things, Best bet is to just find your own way at first and see how youre getting on, can always ask more specific advice later, theres no right or wrong way to play it really.

Sounds good, I’ll see if I can pick up the base game from Asda later and give it a bash and see how we get on.

Why would minecraft of all games need an "upgrade"?

Hopefully that explains the stuttery mess it has become in the last 1-2 weeks on Series S :dread:

Ray Tracing has been on the cards since Series X launched, DF literally played the RT version in MS headquarters.

There are a few greyed out toggle options under Video Settings, one of them is RT. I can't remember what the others were for. There was also a slider for render distance and such I don't remember seeing before.

Gimme that raytraced graphics pack. I can't remember if it's ps5 or xbox that I play this on (it's been ages) but we enjoy playing split screen Minecraft so it'd be most welcome.

That is just a feature update and can sent like all updates. I would hope the new disk version costs the same.

I'd take an extended draw distance and be more than happy!

I've started a new realms map recently with a friend. He's in to crazy automated machines, I focus on making the mines and nether safe. It's great fun logging in and seeing big new developments waiting for you! £3.29 a month is a bit of an annoyance, but it's genuinely a game changer for co op having the save game on a server which either of you can access at any time without being dependent on a single host.

The silly neighbourhood vegetable.

As game surpasses 300m copies sold.

Minecraft Live, developer Mojang's annual livestream celebration of Minecraft, has now been and gone for another year, revealing the winner of 2023's mob vote, new content coming in its 1.21 update, new Star Wars DLC, and more. When 1.20 launched I fired up a new world, just to check out the new additions and to have a world on Xbox (I usually played on Switch). Things went well, ended up killing the Ender Dragon and built a pretty decent base overall, chased some achievements and now I only have a handful left to complete them all. At the same time the kids have gotten curious about the game as well, kids at school talking about it etc. They had always been able to play but they stuck to creative as they didn't like enemies and things but I don't like creative that much so we never played together much, but I decided to ask them if they wanted to build houses in my world, Ill kit them out, light the place up and Ill be there to kill anything that comes along. Its been really cool, I set them each up with a plot beside my main base, they're free to build what they want, my son built a small house and then asked me to put a dome over it to keep everything out, my daughter has built a nice little 2 storey home, fully carpeted, cats everywhere, with an indoor roller coaster and a garden out the side. Its been really cool.

The best thing about it though has been showing them stuff in the game that they usually wouldn't get to see. I killed the Dragon a second time, raided extra end cities to get elytra for them, I even went to the trouble of building a raid farm so I could give them totems without having to spend ages restocking when they break them all. We also undertook a big building project together, a castle on the hill over looking everything. But the biggest thing they wanted was the Wither, something I had put off doing as I had seen and heard how hard is was on Bedrock and I didn't want to unleash a Wither that I couldn't kill. Eventually I decided to give it a go, I picked a flat spot a few hundred blocks from the base, built a little obsidian bunker I could use for a bit of shelter, stocked up on apples, potions, etc and got ready for the fight of my Minecraft life.

It was easy, like genuinely easy, it broke some of my bunker but I did it and it wasn't hard, but it certainly was weird. The fight started as expected, shot it a bit with the bow, got a few swipes in with the sword, at half health it hulked up and did its dash, except it dashed straight down. It dug a massive hole in the dirt and stayed down there, I still had my elytra with me so I was able to glide down to it but it was pitch black and I hadn't thought to bring a night vision potion to the fight, but the Wither was lit up so I just stayed close to it and wailed away with my sword, and got the job done. The one thing that did happen was it popped my totem when it died as I was too scared to move away in case I plunged to my death, a good decision in the end, when I did light the place up there was a ledge right beside where we had fought. But anyway, job done, I had killed the Wither and I got the beacon built, but I had fought it without the kids there, they got to see the beacon but now they wanted to see the Wither, and wanted to see me fight it again.

I knew that first fight was weird, it literally tunnelled straight down, as far as deepslate, a good 60-70 blocks down, then hung around there as I chipped away at it, it was a tough fight but it felt like it wasn't as tough as it was supposed to be, regardless I had to have a round 2 and I was a bit more confident this time. I rebuilt my obsidian bunker, it was a ruin but could be patched up, the kids didn't join the world but they watched as I summoned Wither II and got to fighting it. It was brutal this time! Much tougher in every way, it was firing more skulls, flying much higher, devastating the landscape at every opportunity, destroyed my bunker entirely and all of this before it had even entered stage two of the fight. Day turned to night (this time I had brought night vision potions) so I had regular mobs to contend with as well as the Wither as well as the Wither Skeletons when it did hit phase 2. I didn't have to contend with them the first time, either it didn't spawn them or they were spawned and fell down the big ledge or something, either way I was getting the full Wither experience this time. It dashed at me, dug huge trenches in the dirt, punched giant holes in the ground, but with a heavy dose of golden apples and potions I got the job done and killed the Wither a second time. The devastation after that fight compared to the first was like an atom bomb compared to a paintball skirmish.

I don't know what went wrong the first time I summoned the Wither but it was definitely glitched in some way and a much easier fight. I fought both in the same location but if there's a round 3 there's no way I could have it there again, the ground is destroyed after it. Of course the kids want a round 3 but I'm not so eager and I'm out of Wither Skeleton skulls anyway. Now my son wants me to go back to the End and see some End cities, a nice relaxing fight with the Ender Dragon sounds good too so I might tackle it once more, just to open a new portal is nothing else. Or I might just build random new things while they're asleep so they can be surprised next time they play, either way I'm having fun with the game in a way I never had before.

I've got back into this again recently. My favourite thing to do atm is going around collecting all the new animals to make a weird kind of farm/zoo on the world I share with my partner. He's a lot more into it than I am but he does all the more serious stuff like actually farming resources. I've been spending my time running far off into nowhere finding new biomes to find more animals to bring back.

The Pandas and foxes are so cute

I found something even better than this. Axolotls!

Image

I wasted so much time trying to find some of these after the first ones I found despawned when I ran to get a bucket.

I've got kind of hooked on this again - I found out about all the map making stuff and I've essentially spent today making two massive 2000x2000 maps mapping out as much as I could by boat as I want to get a comprehensive map of mine and my partners realm. It's on Bedrock so there's annoyingly no map mod like we used to have online so using the ingame maps is about as good as I could do.

Another annoying thing is in Java you can use the banners to leave named markers on the map - on bedrock for some dumb reason you can't.
