Some games on release are absolutely shat on by reviewers and gamers who claim that a game just doesn't work or is just not fun to play. I've been thinking, there are many games out there I think are actually really good that were give bad rep on release, here is what I feel is such a game.

Reading reviews for this game I can't help but think many people just didn't get P.N.03 at the time.

Maybe games were judged by different standards at the time but I personally think that P.N.03 is a game that is easy to just knock and say it's gooseberry fool, not that it is gooseberry fool because as I learnt when I bought it again the game becomes really good when you get to grips with it. Yes you can complete the game in less than 4 hours, on easy but if you try to play the game on normal expecting to rush through it then you are going to die, and die, and die. I'm not the first to think the game is under rated I remember looking through an issue of retro gamer once where they did an article on future classics and included this game.
If anything good has to come out of the games bad rep it is the cheap price because people just assume it is rubbish.

Who else on here has played a game that they thought was misunderstood and is much better than you were made to believe?

Didn't do great in the ratings or sales, but I think it's excellent fun, and two player is a blast. The wife and I love it. One of the few games I'm not going to be selling.

The game is gooseberry fool because the combat is gooseberry fool, along with it being repetitive. It doesn't flow. You control like a tank. It's really stylish and I WANTED to love the game, but it plays terribly.
It plays like resident evil 4, if you only had one gun, and it auto locked on, and there were no items. I mean look at it, it's so damn stale: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=pl ... -3mE#t=20s
I can't believe capcom didn't put Vanessa in MVC3 though. She's so damn cool, she'd make an amazing fighting game character.

Lol, yep, that game is all about the flashy special attacks and ass. The actual game is pretty bad.

I'd say Batallion Wars is pretty good for this thread.

It's the sort of game that not many people either heard about or poo poo'd as a shitty version of advance wars. It was bloody good.

OF: Dragon Rising. Huge draw distance, lovely guns with bullet drop, and pre-patched the vehicles were fun. Not great considering the lineage, and obviously codies had only an atom of the vision and talent of BI, but it's an atom that's kept me entertained many times. Hardcore mode with no hud was the way to play it.

I *loved* PN03  it was modern day space invaders. I played it through twice. Still have the little demo disk that they were giving away in Game too.

I enjoyed Battalion Wars, driving around the different vehicles. Not so much BW2 though which seemed to lose some of the fun for me.

No you are right.

It actually got some pretty good reviews at the time:

http://www.metacritic.com/game/gamecube ... ic-reviews

But yes, there was a perception that it was supposed to be more Advance Wars-ish than it was. It was more rip roaring action romp with a sprinkling of strategy rather than the other way round.

I was going to mention Driv3r but I didn't think it was a misunderstood gem, just a 'bad' game I enjoyed. I don't remember the story, the on-foot sections sucked, and it didn't have all the humour and side stuff that people get in GTA, but the actual driving bits pissed all over the GTA games that were out at that point. The cars looked beautiful, the handling was and the damage modelling was fantastic, and the cities themselves felt far more natural for car chases than Liberty or Vice had.

I just picked this up from a jumble sale up the road for £1, (save for a code written on the back in marker pen -ex GAME I imagine - it's in good condition as well). Far better game than I remember.

Thankyou, tha's exactly how it plays. It may be in a 3D environment but you don't play it a 3D shooter
