Moana regarded as best role model for girls; half the UK wants Disney lead gay character

YouGov wrote:Two thirds of Britons (67%) say that it is important for Disney princesses to be good role models for young girls

The three Ms top the list: Moana, Mulan and Merida. Among those who have seen the princess’s respective movies, 72% consider Moana to be a good role model, while 68% say the same of Mulan and 66% Merida.

At the other end of the scale Ariel is seen as an actively bad role model, on 12%, shortly followed by Cinderella and Snow White on 11% and 10% respectively – although people are still far more likely to see these princesses as good role models.

While Disney introduced their first gay character in 2017’s live action remake of Beauty and the Beast, they have yet to depict a homosexual character as a Disney princess. This could be set to change, however, with Jennifer Lee – writer and co-director of the forthcoming Frozen sequel – reportedly considering making Elsa officially a gay character. (Elsa is already seen as a gay icon as she struggles with a secret about herself that is only resolved when she accepts herself for who she is).

Now new YouGov research finds that almost half of Brits (49%) would be comfortable with a future Disney princess being gay. By contrast, one third (34%) would be uncomfortable with such a move, while 17% answered “don’t know”. Age is the key factor here: the younger people are the more comfortable they are with the prospect of a gay Disney princess (while 67% of 18-24 year olds would be comfortable, this falls to only 25% of those aged 65 or older).

Six in ten Brits (60%) would be comfortable with a Disney princess being in her forties or older, and they are even more comfortable with the prospect of a princess who is also a parent (70%). A small majority would also be ok with an overweight princess (52%).

No doubt a gay character would be very controversial in certain parts of the world, leading to the film either being blocked or cut (Russia). Even here's it's the highest at 34%.

I got the chance to watch Moana at the start of the year - probably the best film I've ever seen The Rock feature in. That and I enjoyed the music... :shifty:

More generally, Disney has already done a slightly overweight, and 40+ character, in Up.

We've already had non white princesses with Moana and Tiana (Princess and The Frog), so i don't know why the question over race has been added to this.

Disney introduced their first gay character in 2017’s live action remake of Beauty and the Beast

It was done badly though, as it was pretty much shoehorned in for the sake of Disney being seen to be pc and so felt jarring and out of place as a result (unlike TV series such as Grey's Anatomy where gay characters are among the main cast and naturally feel to be an important part of the show because they are so well written and acted).

There was a few months there where Moana was on a constant loop in our house, I never really got sick of it, its a pretty decent movie.

I can see why a Disney Princess being gay would cause controversy in certain places but in most parts of the world it would be a total non event so I can see them trying it sooner rather than later.

because they are looking at attitudes towards these characters, not whether theyve actually existed or happened before. so this shows 10% of the population are 'uncomfortable' with Moana, Tiana, and Mulan :dread:

For me, Moana is among the finest animated films of the entire decade.

Those songs are just so damn catchy!

"I've been staring at the edge of the water, Long as I can remember, never really knowing why...."

My favourite song, even better than You're Welcome.

I have a loop of How Far I'll Go, We Know The Way, You're Welcome and Shiny which I repeat when I'm running sometimes  it's 11 minutes for those four songs so you repeat that twice and you've done a 5k or four times and you've done a 10k :slol:

We had the same.

He loves Peppa Pig now though, which isn’t bad but would be improved if they made Miss Rabbit a lesbian.

Do they actually need to be princesses as there were also Mulan and Pocahontas.

Can't say I care about Disney princesses, or the questions asked here, just want to say that The Princess & The Frog is really good.

Disney make a big deal about their princesses, its a huge part of their marketing and theyre very visible in the parks. The last few have been much improved role models and they have a big emphasis on using different ethnicities for their princesses now. Making one of them gay would make a big statement, one thats overdue to be honest.

What kind of special grunt admits to feeling uncomfortable at these prospects. I'm 'uncomfortable' sharing the vote with them.

Imagine the backlash they'd get now if they gave Elsa a straight romance in Frozen 2 after the crazy push of Elsa as a gay icon. Would it be the end of Frozen Fever? (we can only hope)

Also Mulan is pretty much a film about being transgender with the woman dressing up and pretending to be a man thing (also "when will my reflection show who I am inside").

Bisexual Shang in Mulan, too. Way ahead of it's time and they didn't even make a big deal of it.

Also yes Moana  So much better than Frozen.

Looking at some of the survey questions, though - Haven't most recent Disney Princesses been feminists? Seems like an odd thing to be asking...

I only wouldn't support an overweight Disney princess.
