About the best mobile game I could recommend is Crashlands, I've sunk way more hours into it than I thought ever would on a mobile game...

I'm new to the world of mobile gaming, having only picked up an iPad tablet a few weeks ago. I love being able to quickly surf the net on the tablet and I'm now looking at the gaming side. At first I was a bit frustrated; there are so many game out there and it seems as if a large proportion of them are pretty poor and / or designed to get you to spend, spend, spend. But... I'm starting to find a few diamonds amongst the rough.

The games that I've enjoyed so far are:

> Hitman Go - wonderful presentation backed up by simple, enthralling gameplay. The puzzles are so intriguing and there are different targets to achieve.
> Lara Croft Go - excellent style and tremendous action - another great title.
> Table Tennis Touch - there are so many table tennis games available but I chose this one and it has been excellent so far. It's challenging but you feel like you're making progress as you learn the controls.
> Okay? - terrific puzzling fun; it's simple but addictive.

I've been disappointed with New Star Soccer. I like the gameplay but, after a whie, it's clear that you have to buy quite a lot of items to get further into the game. I'm really keen to find a decent football game but I haven't seen one that has attracted me so far. Does any GRcadian have experience of Football Manager Mobile or Football Manager Touch? Are they work a look?

Oh, and in another thread, Dragon has already higlighted Knights of the Old Republic as being worthwhile. It's amazing to think a large game like that can be played on a mobile device!

I've not heard of that, Laga - I'll look it up to find out more, dude.

The original was a great game, but as it got updated it leant too heavy into the micro transactions and its now almost impossible to play without buying them.

One of my favourite Mobile Games is Rayman Jungle Run, an eternal runner type game with, you guessed it, Rayman! I've had it on a couple of phones already, play it for a while, get bored with it and then re-download and start playing it again.

It has a couple of moves besides jumping, you can hover (keep your finger on the screen) or punch enemies and blocking objects (by pressing a specific area on the screen).

It has the same wacky look as Origins and Legend. Animations look quite good (it uses the UbiArt framework that is also used for console titles).

The primary objective is reach the end of the level, the secondary to collect all the Lums along the way. The difficulty to do so is exactly right (for me), it usually costs me a couple of attempts to get all of them, but never so man that I get frustrated. When you find all the Lums on a number of levels, extra levels are unlocked which are quite a bit harder, but still doable (the ones I did at least, haven't done them all).

The music is selected at random, from 3 or 4 different tracks. My favourite is the track in which the Lums are singing: "Reggie reggie reggie doo doo, Reggie reggie doo dee doo".

Recommended.

Fallen London. Text-based, choose-your-own adventure-style RPG from the same devs as Sunless Sea (it's set in the same universe)

Most mobile racing games are garbage, but i've been enjoying Thumb Drift in brief sessions.

Yeah, that has been my experience, Rax. I'd heard great things about the title but the adverts and spending make it a bit of a turn-off, now. It's a shame as the core gameplay seems to be fun.

Anyone who hasn't played Drop7 but has a phone capable of doing so can get tae strawberry float. It's like tetris but better.

80 days is also fantastic, the PC version going so far as to win RockPaperShotgun's Best Writing award last year.

Just bought myself a Moga controller and it actually makes games like Asphalt 8 enjoyable, which is quite nice. Anyone have any recommendations for controller based games?

Wow! Lots of great suggestions, guys - superb stuff!

Years ago - I'm talking about back in the early 80s - I used to enjoy the Fighting Fantasy ("choose your own adventure") books. 'm surprised to find that some exist for mobile gaming. They look pretty cool and, in particular, the Sorcery! ones look great. May take a closer look at them.

I'm thinking of getting a controller. I got my Gear VR the other day (that I got for pre-ordering an S7 Edge) and played around with it a little bit. I think most interesting VR games require a controller...

O, another game to check out if you're into Tetris-a-likes: I love Zoo Keeper. I had that game on the DS, payed full price for it (I think 35, maybe 40 euros). It's now on Google Play and the app store for a euro or 2. Well worth it!

Genuinely some amazing games on mobile. Recently I've been playing...

Danmaku Unlimited 2
Dark Echo
Downwell
Hitman GO
Lara Croft GO
Monument Valley
Pac-Man 256

Sure, there may not be a wealth of amazing exclusives, but some games just fit mobile so well (pretty much the entire list above)

I'll try not to repeat anything already mentioned.

The Room/The Room 2 - Absolutely brilliant puzzle games

Space Invaders Infinity Gene
- One of the best classic redesigns for touch screens you are ever likely to come across.

Battle of the Bulge - Deep but very specific WW2 TBS game (there are also two other games Drive on Moscow and Desert Fox)

Denki Blocks - Classic GBA puzzle game, if you never played it before its brilliant and deserves a look.

By far from the only one, X COM Enemy Within, Grim Fandango Remastered, Broken Age, The Wolf Among Us (in fact most of TellTale games recent stuff), GTA games up to San Andreas, Transistor...a whole bunch of games really.

Oh, then there's this, 19 days of my life playing this and I still haven't spent a penny on it (I'm starting to feel a bit bad about it really.

Thanks for the tips, guys. I'm particularly intrigued by your suggestions of 80 Days, Monument Valley, The Room and Space Invaders Infinity Gene - I'll take a look.

Oh, and having played a bit more Hitman Go - man is it a great game! Brilliant stuff. I've completed world one (all targets) and I'm up to about level 7 in world two. It's so addictive!

Atomas is currently my addiction of choice. It's a matching game loosely based on the periodic table.

Monument Valley is really good, short but very sweet. Love the music too and the art style speaks for itself.

Drop7 is OK for a while but tedious long term, it doesn't have the same appeal as Tetris. Not sure why Edge went utterly fangirl over it.
