It's out. There's no thread. So here's to Monster Hunting on the Switch.

The Switch version of the 3DS Generations game took a full year to arrive in countries outside Japan, but it is here, and has reviewed well. Many an argument has started up over whether Generations Ultimate or World is the best Monster Hunter experience, but that's not what this thread is about.

So far, my experience has been great - despite leaping head-first into a fight with a Great Maccoa without preparing. I got revenge and beat it after fully prepping up, and am now ready to continue beating it again and again to get that tailspike needed to upgrade my Dual Blades.

Arrangement for multiplayer sometime soon, maybe?

Never bothered making a thread because Monster Hunter threads always die a death on here  :(

Well, with the Switch as popular as it is, hopefully this one can live.

Still HR1. Been after that Maccao's tailspike, so I haven't really been doing anything else except hunting that.

Never played a MH game but this one has got me tempted, I hear it's supposed to be an impressive example of the franchise?

Soon as I get money I'm getting a Switch for this, World despite being mechanically superior in pretty much every way is a bit lacking in content so I can't wait to dive into everything GU has to offer.

It has a bit of a learning curve (I found playing MH World first was very beneficial), but once you understand the fundamentals and put a bit of time in, it's fantastic! It has SO much content.

It's basically a "Best of" of all the pre-World Monster Hunter games.

My starting thoughts

- Goddamn that's a lot of downloadable quests
- Also I'm immediately rich and the owner of 50 slick axes my god
- These HUD elements are so low res
- Camera on right stick is weird and problematic for camera control when holding A to gather or carve
- Luckily the options let you switch stick and d-pad but
- The switch left joycon stick and d-pad are the wrong way round so I can't claw anyway
- What and how are these new hunting styles, SP skills and beast mode

I have yet to actually fight anything other than the training Great Maccao

Sounds cool, I'll check out the demo first but I think I'm going to go for it anyway!

I never properly got into MH until Tri so I never had the wonderful experience of the claw on the PSP. I did own Freedom Unite but didn't like it at all compared to Tri.

Tri is when I stopped playing until 4U, I can't find the time to play MH on a home console (hence only putting 60 hours into World too)

As a "best of" it has the most content, and as the most recent (ignoring World) it has the most refined gameplay with the best quality of life improvements.

However that content can also overhwelm and drown you, and it basically assume familiarity with the games it is pulling from (and deliberately being different from).

IMO 4U and World are still the best jumping on points to the series. But persevere through the learning curve and Generations is fantastic.

Yeah I've heard that the series in general (and particularly pre-World) is not that welcoming to new players so I'm expecting a bit of work required to get properly get into it!

I think I'm ready for my next meaty experience on Switch though as I've been dipping into more smaller experiences recently and have got an itch for a real time sink!

Picked this up recently, just need a few weeks to get my Switch Axe mojo back after not playing MH4U for quite a while and then I'll be up for some multiplayer.

I'm way too behind on a bunch of games I planned to play so I will have to skip out on this, unfortunately. Not sure I'd be able to go back after playing World either >,>

Part of me is scared that I'd just get burnt out super quick too. I didn't play World nearly as much as I thought I would either. Missed out on loads of the seasonal events and some of the newer monsters. I think I need to face reality and accept that I just don't have time for games like MH anymore. Which really sucks.

I'll still probably pick this up when it's a bit cheaper down the line and the hunger to play comes back tho >,>

The good thing about this is that once you have one of the special event quests you can do it whenever you want as long as your HR is high enough. Was really annoying in World when they were restricted to specific times before buggering off for weeks or months.
