It'll be cool to hear your thoughts, Maf. Maybe you'll persuade some GRcadians to give it a go... for such a well-regarded series, there seems to be surprisingly few folk into it around here!

Just had a good hour or so running through the three quests, very happy with what I've seen so far. Don't have time for a proper write up (meant to be writing one for my uni's paper so might link that later) but general thoughts so far:
- Absolutely gorgeous visually, some very choppy animations for distant monsters though (not sure if that's just with it being the beta) but nice and smooth during combat
- The tracking mechanic works really well, much more involving than in past entries where you just learn the spawn points and peg it there as fast as you can; gives you a slight tour of the area before you get stuck into fighting
- The seamless maps are a big improvement, makes chasing a monster as it tries to escape much more fun - especially since a lot of the trails between areas have slidey slopes which let you catch up and knock their legs out from under them - very fun
- Monster interaction is great and really changes up a hunt; in the Barroth quest it was suddenly jumped by some sort of giant aquatic monster in the marsh bit which gave me the opportunity to get some supercharged shots in with the bow, then in the Anjanath quest it tried running away through the nest of a sleeping Great Jagras so I woke it up with my slinger and it pounced on the Anjanath so it didn't get away
- Slinger is a nice touch but I haven't really used it that much yet, I need to keep a better eye out for bits of the environment to fire it at
- Bow is a lot more fun to use now that it's got a few different options (standard charge shot, quick shot, supercharged shot) and changing coatings is a lot easier; auto charging a shot after dodges is also a nice touch that keeps the pace up
- Long Sword feels pretty much the same as ever, I'd recommend it as a starting weapon for any beginners as it's very easy to get to grips with
- Charge Blade again feels much the same but with a few slight changes; the new dashing slash takes a bit of getting used to (I kept doing it when I meant to do the charged slash to get power phials) but does add some extra movement options, other main difference I noticed is that the Ultra Burst finisher with the axe doesn't end the supercharged mode anymore, it just uses up all your power phials
- Insect Glaive is still a lot of fun but the kinsect doesn't seem to handle as well as before, although probably gets easier with time

Overall I'd say it's still very much the same old Monster Hunter at its core, but the new mechanics and fresh lick of paint are a real improvement and makes everything feel a lot more fluid and involved. I think it also feels a tad more beginner friendly, I'd be interested to hear from any newcomers as to whether that's the case or not. My one complaint for the beta is that the quests all have a fairly short time limit, would have been nice to get a free hunt mode to be able to explore the areas at bit more of a leisurely pace.

Trust me, I could go into much, much greater detail :P
(although I did end up writing more than I'd meant to lol)

Never played one of these before. Passed the first quest (used a sword-axe thing) but timed out on the second (with bow).

As a beginner, its tough to get your head around. I've put a few minutes since those quests to practice some of the different weapons which helped. Seems to be a lot going on which is a bit overwhelming but I guess this is from being dropped into quests midgame and I'm sure it isnt too hard to grasp.

Will probably pick this up to play with a mate who is also interested in this and a complete novice

There's a proper room system in the real thing, not sure why they've made it so convoluted for the beta. Iirc they're implementing a guild system; up to 50 people in a guild and then 8 (?) player rooms that members can join whenever. Or just 8 player public rooms if you prefer that.

Biggest mistake I made was during the second mission. I chose a really hard hitting, slow weapon and kept companion's agro ability. This made for many a comedy moment where just as I'm lining up a hit on the beastie it moves to attack Doot and I miss my hit by a swampy mile. :x On top of which a dino like beast, whose off-spring I slaughtered, kept joining the fray (on my side!) making it hard to keep track of just what the heck I wasn't hitting.

Took down highest difficulty beta target with 90 seconds remaining :toot: It was tedious af :( Fought it with the axe/sword thing (the one you're quipped with at start of training area), will try again later with other weapons.
Playing on a launch PS4 and everything feels solid (fps, gameplay mechanics, controls) but the fighting feels hit and miss, doubly so when it's done on very uneven ground, even when locked on to a target. (Many times I found myself locked on but my swings weren't just missing they weren't even pointed in the right direction!) But I am new to the series, and this is only a beta so I expect it'll take a wee while to get into the feel of the combat. Unless something else comes along I'll most likely be playing this on launch.

The lock on is just for the camera, it's not like other games where you'll strafe when locked on, you still have to aim your own swings. It's mainly so that you can still target specific body parts to break them/hit weak spots.

Have you tried the new account trick? (Make a new user profile, go to sign up to PS+ and see if it has a free PS+ trial offer for you.)

Fair enough. Ta for clarifying that!

Played with a mate who played 4 and made this much more enjoyable. Won all three quests now so calling it to a close.
