Definitely the hammer bros. for me. Made easier with a fire flower, but they're still very tricky enemies. Drove me nuts on Super Mario Bros. DX as a kid!

The big fish and Lakitu are annoying as well, though they don't give me as much trouble. I'll also vouch for the rip van fish from Super Mario World who relentlessly chases after you

And the Mario 3 sun? As long as you keep running through the level at full speed and pay attention to him when he dives, he's not too bad. Sure is creepy though...

Hammer Bros. When I haven't played Mario in a while, my first death is always when I first encounter one.

Most things mentioned here are annoying, but nothing, NOTHING!, beats the frustration of mistiming a jump and being killed by a goomba. :cry:
