I did not come into the thread expecting to read this :o ... good call, though  .

My personal hype levels will never reach the point that I hit prior to getting my Commodore 64 in 1985, but that wasn't at launch. I'd personally go with the Sony PlayStation in 1995. I saw it in the shop on launch day playing Destruction Derby and I could not believe how great the graphics were. Bits were actually flying off the cars  . And the console played games on CD :o . When I setup my machine at home and played Ridge Racer, it genuinely felt like the dream of having an arcade machine in the home had been achieved.

Probably the PS2. My brother had a launch console pre-order (using paper carbon-copy forms at Game!) and he was petrified about getting mugged on the way home so I went with him after work to collect it because, at 5'7", there ain't no muggers gonna mess with me.

Got SSX and Timesplitters. What a console the PS2 was.

Honourable mention to the Gamecube and the PS4. The PS3 was too expensive at launch for me; I actually waited about a year and a half before getting one.

Can't really remember, but I imagine I would have been most hyped about the PS2 launch.

Dreamcast, first console bought with my own cash, spent literally a whole months wages on it, sonic and toy commander. What a time to be alive

Switch is the first console I've bought at launch

I was super excited for the Christmas' after launch though when I got my GBA, PS2, PSP and Wii. Of those I probably remember PSP and Wii the most fondly.

Actually thinking about it, I was hyped as strawberry float for the Wii launch. I think I called the place I'd pre-ordered it from about 4 times a week for months to make sure they still had my order in :shifty:

I didn't buy a 360 at launch, but when I did get around to picking one up I did so with Call of Duty 2. Completely blew me away. Still have a copy today and it holds up extremely well.

CoD2 was very impressive on 360 especially with the volumetric smoke. Even some games today don't manage to pull of those atmospherics as well.

I have it on PC and the 360 competed admirably. I remember playing it in a Game demo pod.

At the time all the next gen consoles were too expensive for me - I only picked up a Wii in 2011!

Gamecube for me, it was the first home console I bought at lunch and the first I'd saved my own cash for.

Was excited about it from the Spaceworld announcement and I remember the wait for launch in the UK which seemed to drag on and on. Was so excited when they finally announced a date and it only got better when they knocked £40 off the price so close to launch, allowing me to get an extra game.

I had a chance to play one a little before launch too when I went into Toys R Us by chance and they had a demo pod set up, I played Rogue Leader and was absolutely blown away by how good it looked and how comfy the controller was.

Got it on day one with Luigi's Mansion, Sonic Adventure 2: Battle, Rogue Leader and Super Monkey Ball. The first is still one of my favourite Nintendo games, short and fairly easy but absolutely beautiful and full of charm; Sonic Adventure 2 wasn't great in retrospect but playing Sonic on a home Nintendo console for the first time was mind blowing; Rogue Leader blew my mind, it looked so realistic (at the time) and played beautifully, I was never very good at it but I still had a brilliant time playing it. As for Super Monkey Ball, that was my bonus game that I got due to the price drop and I'm so glad I did, was one of my most played Gamecube games, a brilliant surprise on launch day.

Best thing was that the first year we had a great run of new and exclusive games, I remember Smash Bros Melee and Pikmin both came out within the first two months and by Christmas we'd had Resident Evil, Super Mario Sunshine, Eternal Darkness and Starfox Adventures.

It was a bloody brilliant console, still my favourite and it deserved to do far better than it did.

2001 was a good year to be alive.

Loved reading everyone's affection for the Gamecube. I own one, but have no recollection of actually getting it (my mum insists I bugged her for ages, but I genuinely don't have any memory of that) and have barely played on it aside from Twin Snakes. I just think the PS2 was THE system for me in that generation, so the Gamecube always got overlooked, which is a shame.

Really might have to give it another proper go.

Tried to play Rogue Leader a couple of years ago, admittedly though the horrible supplied cable (gave away my composite) and you just couldn't make anything out. The Death Star level was basically 'hunt the grey smudge'.
