Sometimes it isn't possible to give that kind of space at peak times. The only safe solution would be for traffic to be ground to a halt which is never going to happen.

If it isn't possible to give enough space to overtake safely, you shouldn't be overtaking.

I can't see how anybody can argue with that.

Agreed. Obviously others don't agree that while legally entitled, hobbiest cyclists could be considerate and not use certain roads at times that make it almost impossible to overtake them safely so I'll drop it.

What about "hobbyist" motorists? When should they be shunned from the roads for the convenience of others?

The same, during peak commuting hours.

I'm struggling to think of many times that I've seen cyclists causing massive traffic jams. Jams are almost always caused by there being too many cars on the road or because of an accident (usually involving motor vehicles).

As I said earlier the best solution is to have dedicated cycle lanes, until then angry drivers will just have to put up with the odd bike slowing them down for a couple of minutes.

we're not going to convince Hime; he's hell-bent on his strange view of chaos on the roads with cyclists causing tailbacks on all the A and M roads. i see it every day, those lycra-clad wankers!

all glib remarks aside Hime, if you're still reading (and any other motorists who dislike cyclists) - please put this in perspective: you're complaining about a mild annoyance (being held up behind a slow cyclist, adding 1 or 2 minutes to your journey, at best) above and beyond the safety of a vulnerable road user. please dont do that.

You seem to have misunderstood, there aren't tailbacks because most people will overtake however they can, if they didn't there would be miles of road with people driving at 8-10mph. I'm not saying it's right, I agree that people should overtake safely but people aren't going to sit at that speed for miles on end. I believe cyclists, especially hobbiest cyclists could take some responsibility and not use busy roads at peak times.

For clarification my views are based on traveling the length and breadth of the country by car for work. However, my current 120 mile commute (round trip) does mean I'm on the same roads all the time so perhaps my views have become conditioned by some particularly bad stretches of road.

Are you slowing down as you overtake to drive alongside these cyclists and conducting a survey to check why they're cycling, or something?
