Whereas now, it sort of feels like it doesn't exist. I'd forgotten about it completely until reading that post.

Exactly.

It's the highest grossing film ever. Compare it to Titanic, Cameron's other money making machine and the second highest grossing film ever. Titanic has a firm place in popular culture and scenes are regularly referenced like "paint me like one of your French girls", the sex scene in the car, Jack's death etc. Popular culture seems to have just forgotten about Avatar which is odd when it was so popular.

It's not really surprising though, aside from the tech, the film itself is really dull. I'm not sure you could get a more generic lead than Sam Worthington.

I was bored and channel surfing about a year ago when I saw Avatar about to start on TV. I could think of no reason to watch it.

Stephen Lang's performance is a good enough reason, he's great in it.

Never seen Avatar, not sure I'd bother now either. Wasn't Cameron supposed to be going back and saving the Terminator franchise?

Only until you look at the inflation adjusted figures where it doesn't even make it into the top ten, and that's before you take into account that a large proportion of the cash it took was due to inflated 3D ticket prices.

It's less well regarded and remembered than other big money spinners (Titanic, Star Wars etc.) not just because it's arguably not a very good film but also simply because it really wasn't watched by anywhere near as many people.

It's not a bad film at all, it's just more forgettable than something like Titanic or Star Wars. It's still the most impressive looking film I've ever seen in a cinema, and the only 3D film that I've seen where I was happy to pay the extra premium.

If you adjust for inflation Gone for the World is the highest but Avatar is still second. It made $3bn-even when you account for the 3D element that's a massive amount. A huge number of people saw it.

And it's not a bad film by any means. It has a simple story but the universe created within it is very impressive. Definitely a film that is better to watch on the big screen (and in 3D) though.

I see that the IMDD message boards are being shut down on the 20th February. I'm pretty shocked by that. I have to admit that the last few years were just full of trolls which made so films boards unreadable but in years gone by I loved using them, such a shame.

On the happier side I just remembered that it's Super Bowl weekend so film trailers ahoy!

Short version of this Sunday's transformers Super Bowl trailer.

Series needs to die, then be given a proper dark reboot with G1-style robots.

The first Transformers was awful, why did anybody bother watching the sequels?
