So it looks like I will be soon moving over to England, specifically the midlands area near Birmingham, as I've got a new job. The company is based roughly in the middle of that circle, and so I'll be commuting to work. I'm trying to figure out where is best to live (at least initially) and thought I'd get some advice from people who might know the area and could give some general recommendations about where is nice?

I hear Leamington Spa is nice but expensive, but I haven't heard much about the other areas.

Expand the circle a little and move to Melton Mowbray.

Where do you currently live?

I thought everyone on the 'cade was based in the UK/Ireland except for Chalky over there in Columbia

I don't live in that area but on brief visits don't move to Leicester or Coventry, Warwick though seemed very nice.

What's your budget? And what sort of place do you want, lively and busy or quiet and calm?

I'm currently living in Dublin, so I'm just hopping across the water.

My budget is around £400-600 a month, I'd say. Ideally closer to the £400, but if a particular area is just so much better then I'd consider paying more. I'd prefer a place close to a reasonable amount of activity, which is why I'm mainly looking at the cities or larger towns and not the little villages, but as I'll be commuting anyway it's not such a big deal if they're a short drive away.

I have to say I think you'll struggle to find somewhere decent in a good area for less than £600/month.

I would probably recommend Solihull. It's a largely well off area but there is a large population of younger people so the activity is there, as opposed to somewhere like Four Oaks in Sutton Coldfield, which is a lovely place but stuffed full of the upper class and/or old people.

Solihull is also very close to Birmingham (something like a 10 minute train journey). Birmingham has an almost traditionally poor reputation but in reality it is a great city.

I'd second Solihull,it's a very nice area.

I was very happy in Loughborough and Leicester as well, but they might be a bit too far for your liking.

Tamworth does have Glowy, but it also has the Snowdome.

I'd third Solihull, although I was born there and I grew up there, so I'm slightly biased.

I'm in Leamington Spa and it's a pretty nice town with lots of good shops and good bars. It's not cheap for the good parts though. Coventry is cheap but it's a shithole.

Wolverhampton's cheap but also a bit of a shithole. As I recall Burton is alright, but that's only from having been there a few times rather than living there.

If it helps. I'll be moving away soon, so the Midlands will no longer have me. Making it safe haven again.

I live and work in Leamington Spa and it's lovely. It's picturesque and has a really pleasant town centre with good shops, bars and restaurants.

It's not cheap, but your budget will probably get you an alright flat if you're living on your own.

Down south :dread: to be with the girlfriend. This in no way has any effect on my season ticket holding at villa. This has all been cleared and checked before any decision was made. :slol:
