I hear Rugby has an OK cheap / not a total shithole balance.

My hometown.

Much better now than it used to be. Poor nightlife though, if that's what you're into.

I'd go Solihull, Leamington Spa, Warwick, Sutton Coldfield. They're all good. Stratford is ace, but very expensive. Do not, repeat NOT go to Bedworth or Nuneaton. I don't even mean move there: don't go there, ever.

Coventry isn't as big a shithole as people make out. I had five reasonably happy years there. If you need city life in central England, it's right up there.

Stourbridge is okay, I always thought. I have family there. The Broadway.

Cov is just an overwhelmingly ugly city.

Because it got so strawberry floated in the war all the architecture is all 50s-60s concrete, I find it a pretty depressing place because of that. It's a well equipped city though and it's nice and cheap.

I live fairly near Warwick, so can recommend there, and I'll also repeat the recommendations for Solihull and Leamington, both of which are also lovely.

Also depends what kind of place you’re after really. There are dozens of lovely villages, some remote, some near towns. There are some decent suburbs of Birmingham you could look at as well, if you’d rather be closer to the city. Or the towns we’ve mentioned, and the surrounding areas. Happy to advise on specifics if you have particular requirements!

I'm gonna throw my hat in this ring as well. Possibly moving back to England, having emigrated 15 years ago to Australia and then by myself to Berlin. My knowledge of England is awful, but I was thinking about Bristol? Any opinions?

Looking for somewhere after Berlin that isn't a grey, ugly concrete jungle for 7 months of the year, somewhere that has a lot going on, a good cafe/food scene with a bit of nature close by. The fact that Bristol has a harbour was another big plus as I miss the water from Sydney. I never lived up North and have no family or roots there so that's probably out of the picture.

If it's anywhere in the UK I'd pick Brighton. It's not cheap but it's lovely and by the sea. Although Yorkshire is the best place on earth, I don't think I'd recommend anywhere on the coast up there :slol:

Have you got money? Bristol is great and has everything you need, but it is an expensive city. I've fallen in love with Devon and Exeter, but it is a very small city and very far down south. Devon is just beautiful though and I'm gutted to be moving to the East.

Will be living in Lincoln in 3 weeks. Again if anyone knows anything at all about Lincoln or the area then give us some info.

Bristol is a great city (I am biased though ;) ) but I wouldn't get too excited by the idea of the harbour. The harbour itself is nice but the water is brown and polluted looking.

It's not the cheapest here (althought that depends what part of the city you were looking at) but there's plenty to do. Avoid places in areas like Hartcliffe, Easton, Knowle West and Southmead. St Pauls has a bad reputation but isn't as bad as it is made out to be.

Yeah, I managed to walk through St Pauls once and I didn't even get murdered!

Bristol is great! Though a bit expensive. places like Clifton.

Like Moggy said, the harbour is OK but it's no crystal blue waterfront! But there's plenty to do, places to go. Good night life. Plenty of parks or 'green' areas. Plenty of cafes, bars and food outlets of various nature.

You'll love it!

It's really not as bad as it is made out to be. Years ago maybe but nowadays it is no worse than most other non-Clifton areas.

Cheers for the tips guys, incredibly difficult trying to work out a city when you've never visited. So those suburb tips are really handy. St. Pauls huh? Would have never known.

St Pauls isn't the suburbs, it's inner city. I am not suggesting moving there though. ;)

If you do come to Bristol ask one of us and we can let you know what an area is like.

Are you a hipster? Do you like a pile of stones that pretends to be a beach? Would you be happy with a new age hippy as your MP? If yes to these, move to Brighton.

If not, move to Bristol. Bristol is lovely and a little expensive for a reason (but not London expensive). I see it as cosmopolitan enough to not feel like you are away from a proper big city with all the facilities that go with it, but also not too far from the wonders of the (real) south west countryside. And its also only a couple of hours to London.

If you want proper beach, there is obviously nothing comparable to Australia here so I would think at the other items on your tick list.

I visit a couple of times a year. Okish nightlife if you like studenty stuff and the 'city' centre is very pretty. Nice friendly locals too.

But..

It's a pain in the arse to get to from anywhere. Like an hour in all directions! Train service is a faff too.

Can think of far worse places to live though!!!!

I've never actually been out in Coventry, have just drove through it a couple of times and went to the Ikea once, but it's definitely a strong contender for the ugliest place I've ever seen. Like proper relentlessly ugly too - they'd need to nuke half the city to even start to make improvements.

Late to the party but I lived in Solihull for the last few years and would definitely recommend it, there's enough there to keep you entertained and it's close enough to Brum that you can nip in relatively easily if you get bored.
