Just this week Sony have said that the next PlayStation won't be going download only - there just isn't the broadband /server farm network. I doubt the next next generation (PlayStation 5) will be download only.

I think the hard sell for a next gen machine will be making it powerful enough to be worth upgrading to.

The current gen was a massive leap (barring Wii) over the previous generation in terms of raw power and has also ushered in online console gaming almost as standard, downloadable games, HD and even 3D..

Other than extra raw power, there's not a lot new they can bring to make people want to upgrade to a new machine and I have to wonder, how much better will graphics look on a new console made with current technology and will it be enough to make people upgrade..

I'm guessing we'll see better effects, higher poly counts and more stable framerates but will it be enough to make people want to move on?

Part of me would love a new, more poweful console but I think it'll be a big gamble unless there's any kind of big secret weapon type feature in there other than the power.

We've seen motion control and all sorts already, what else new can they bring with the next gen?

I can see one of them annoucning that their current console will be around longer than we're all expecting but doubt either will drop out completely.

The two teaming up and creating a joint console would be ideal but due to the number of competing services each has built up this gen I can't see it happening. A joint console branded and sold by Sony in Japan and MS in the US and maybe jointly in Europe could be a great result for both all round.

I guess Sony could leave the console market and move their movie/music type services into their TV's/bluray etc.. and maybe focus on that along with phones and the handheld market but would be odd.

I fully expect both Sony and Mircosoft to have new machines in the future.

Only if what is being streamed is HD. I can watch iPlayer/Lovefilm on my TV via streaming, if the content is suitable (i.e input lag etc) then I don't see how this won't be an option in the major markets (UK, US, Japan, Korea). UK broadband speeds are only going to improve. In fact, I'm going to call it, streaming of PS2 games direct to a TV app before the end of the year.

If Sony were able to get the PlayStation Store/PS3 into their TVs or computers that really would be something. Freeview HD, on-demand films, music, TV shows & videogames; all accessible with no extra box or subscription fee.

Why on Earth would Microsoft bow out? They're in a damn good position at the moment, and I don't see why they'd suddenly decide to drop it.

Sony, however, have not done as well as they'd hoped with the PS3, and the Vita seems to be having a slow start in Japan. They've gone from being untouchable, to being in a greatly weakened position after a series of PR nightmares and lower-than-predicted sales.

Of course the head of a cloud-gaming service is going to say stuff like this to drum up support for their own product. Non-news as far as I'm concerned.

Although, if Sony went that might mean stuff like Uncharted or Motorstorm on PC*

*yeah right.

Who isn't happy with the way games look on current consoles? Anyone? Personally the only thing motivating me to buy new hardware would be so I could keep buying new releases. I'm not desperate for new hardware as such.

I don't believe that for one minute. Anyone who likes video games will just switch to another manufacturer - most of the games you play on the 360 are multiformat anyway.

If Yoshida had any love for the UK, then I would be thrilled to see Sony go third party, but now? I just don't know.

Motorstorm, Uncharted, Demons Souls, all in 1920x1080 (1200), scalable graphics to work on lower end PCs, screenshots can be taken, videos can be recorded, youtube.

I would be ecstatic if Sony started porting stuff to PC with some effort. Don't want them to stop feeding console kiddys their daily dose of nonsense though, we need clueless people to pay high prices to subsidise for the rest.

There are a few on here who need new hardware all the time. I agree with you though and would be happy with the consoles I have for some time to come.

About as funny as Steam closing and PC gaming dying completely.

I don't believe it's happening, but it could be an interesting 'gamble' if sony decide not to go next-gen this year (or for the next few years)

Imagine microsoft blow their load announcing the new super powerful and expensive uber console, hoping to blow wii-u and ps4 out of the water...then sony turn around and just say they're updating/improving the PS3, to make it cheaper, improve it's 'home hub' experience etc, and Wii-U effectively matches the PS3 performance, and Nintendo and Sony court the 3rd party developers and encourage them all to develop for their systems using there existing equipment/software etc and not require the huge expense of moving development up to the next level of fidelity etc...microsoft then launch an expensive console with little support, while wii-U and PS3 are selling for coppers with lots of support, Wii-Uwith the benefit of Nintendo exclusive software and PS3 as a blu-ray, home entertainment hub device...

Why wouldn't the nextbox get support? Plenty of people with the 360 would upgrade and if it's the only next generation console on the market it will get a lot of the audience of the PS3 as well. Rather than being bad for Microsoft it would be almost a dream scenario where they can have a whole sector that used to have 2 contenders all to themselves.

But isn't PC gaming totally dead already?

I think if Nintendo went under StayDead would honestly do a seppeku on himself, so it's a bit rich him wanting to see others freak out.
