This is what I'd do. I'd support the PS3 for a few more years whilst secretly working on it's replacement. It would be very interesting to see what would happen if someone released a new console a few years after the competitors, it could backfire badly or deal a massive, unrecoverable blow to the opposition.

Ive been saying this for a while now. I don;t think the PS4 will ever exist as a dedicated box, but rather PSN will become Sony's next platform. They could build a decent chipset into other electronics like Blu-ray players, VAIO, Tablets and TVs and licence the tech to 3rd parties (Samsung, Panasonic etc).
Players can then hook up a controller via bluetooth, shove in whatever USB storage medium they prefer and voila: the future of consoles. Software could be streamed like OnLive or downloaded and played on storage. I could see Microsoft doing a similar thing with Xbox LIVE TBH.

Perhaps the original speaker didn't cross the console market with portables, indicating Vita will be their only dedicated console as it is designed to be played more at home than on the bus.

With the 360 continuing to sell remarkably well, you have to wonder why Microsoft would want to launch a new machine either.

I see the press pushing for a new generation, I see retail pushing for a new generation, & I see a few developers pushing for a new generation. What I don't sense, at all, is a clamouring for new hardware from consumers. I remember in 2001 a lot of people were beginning to grow really tired of the PSone & wanted something new. The Wii's grown stale, thus the need for the Wii U (which on current evidence is only bringing it in line with what we have now), whereas I think the majority are more than content with the PS3 & 360. Bit sick & tired of some of the franchises? Maybe. Sick of the hardware? I don't think so. There's still a lot of movement left in price too.

Firmware updates keep a console fresh. Developers are only constrained by their imaginations and budgets, not technology.

I don't think the inferiority of Skyrim on PS3 has anything to do with the limitations of the hardware. It's just been poorly coded for that particular system.

I wouldn't mind if one of them bowed out.....but all the evidence would be that it would be Sony. Still, I can't see it happening.

El Shaddai runs on the same engine, Gamebryo, and on my personal experience has nothing like the game breaking glitches present in New Vegas.

Haven't read the whole thread, but Sony have just launched the Vita, which is PS3 compatible thanks to a firmware update. That could suggest that the home console is going to stick around for a bit longer.

I've completed New Vegas (not every mission, but the main story and a few of the others) and only encountered 3 crashes in total. I wouldn't consider that game breaking. The only game I've had crash more than that was Oblivion.

How convenient of a Cloud company to predict doom for disc based systems.

And completely stupid considering Sony haven't even released the PS Vita in Europe yet.

Just to see the reaction of a lot of the posters on here. It'd be the funniest day ever.

it wouldn't make sense, the xbox is a better seller than the playstation and is just all round better, especially with the Kinect stuff killing it off would be stupid.

Whoah Debatable, last time I checked I couldn't play my Blue Rays in an Xbox 8-)

This. It was designed with PC and 360 architecture in mind.

Fair play, I perhaps exaggerated a bit. It's just there was an area just beyond Nipton I physically couldn't get past. It froze, I got stuck in scenery, time and time again. I gave up in the end.

So, on the one hand...
Microsoft are all but confirmed to be unveiling their new console this year.
On the other...
Sony are determined not to fall behind in the next gen release schedule like last time.

And one of them isn't releasing a next gen console.

I see...

They will both release consoles. The game market is too big to ignore atm.
