Post'MS or Sony to bow out of console market at E3'
by KK » Thu Jan 12, 2012 12:01 pm

MCV wrote:Either Microsoft or Sony will shock the E3 crowds this summer by announcing that they will not release a next-generation console.

That’s the claim of cloud computing firm Gaikai.

The company’s chief product officer Nanea Reeves told Industry Gamers that: "Not all of the current console makers will have one more generation. That will be the big news at E3."

With Nintendo’s Wii U on track for a launch this year, that leaves Sony and Microsoft as the contenders.

MCV understands that Microsoft’s next-gen hardware plans are already well underway, meaning that if Gaikai’s claims are true they must reference Sony.

And perhaps that isn’t such a stretch.

MCV sticks by its January 6th story that both Microsoft and Sony will use this year’s E3 as the platform from which to reveal their next-gen offer.

But perhaps Kaz Hirai’s denial from earlier this week is actually true. Perhaps there will be no console. Perhaps the next-gen will, quite literally, be the next-gen.

As these predictions get ever more ludicrous...

However, what is stopping Sony from disrupting the whole generation pre-set that dictates that all three manufacturers have to go at it using the same or similar technology specifications? You'd have three consoles on sale, in theory, all on massively varying scales of graphical prowess, all very much doing their own thing. Why can't Sony launch in 2015, or 16?

How would Sony compete in the meantime against Wii U & 720? By having the PS3 ludicrously cheap. And if rumours are true that Wii U isn't going to be much more powerful than the current set of consoles, it's not like the PS3 will be alone in looking 'out of date'.

Interesting. Perhaps they really are waiting for the tech they need to get cheap enough for those very high resolutions that have been mooted.

nextbox 2013, nextstation 2016 maybe? they could easily all have their own strategy in future.

While I can see the PlayStation 4 missing this year's E3, I can't see any of them say "nope, we're out".

I can't decide if Sony going third party would be amazing or a travesty.

Maybe the next Playstation won't be a physical box, maybe it'll be an app built into Sony TV's with all the gaming content being streamed (a la Onlive). Controllers just connect to the TV via Bluetooth.

While that'll be fun to see Rik's reaction to, as I said before I can't see it happening.

Can't see this happening, especially within the next couple of years.

Rik could keep the XBox division profitable on his own.

So a cloud-based gaming company says MS or Sony aren't going to release next-gen hardware. Riiiiiight...

This prediction is worse than Pachter's.

Maybe it's two pronged - they neither want to spend the massive amounts launching another console, nor is technology advanced or indeed cheap enough for them to do what they want to do. Maybe they want to do something like Onlive, but can't because the infrastructure simply isn't there.

I think the dream has always been to be able to access "PlayStation" anywhere, no matter the device. But obviously as a hardware company, they want to be in control of it. Crazy Ken was talking about it over 10 years ago.

Just to see the reaction of a lot of the posters on here. It'd be the funniest day ever.

Maybe they just know something about Nntendos planned launch price for the Wii-U? :shifty:

it wouldn't make sense, the xbox is a better seller than the playstation and is just all round better, especially with the Kinect stuff killing it off would be stupid.

At the very most, it's that Sony (as it has said it will) will be sticking rigidly to the ten-year lifespan for PS3 and therefore moving out of the current five-year generation cycle.

If it hits a £110-ish price point for the PS3 in the next 12 months, in time for next Xmas, at least, it would absolutely clean up. Hell, I'd buy a 2nd one for upstairs. If it did that, software developers would continue supporting it because of the installed user base - look at how well the PS2 did even after the PS3's launch. If there was no 'new' Sony console, I can only imagine the PS3 would continue to be ok.

I'd be fine with this and certainly won't be rushing into buying any of the next gen of consoles until the TV manufacturers have settled down and decided exactly what the hell they're doing with the next step up from 1080p.

If Yoshida had any love for the UK, then I would be thrilled to see Sony go third party, but now? I just don't know.

Think how different their output would be if their software had to turn a profit, too.
