I really like an album by Travis Morrison, called 'Travistan'.

What's so wrong with that?

Well... http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/article/r ... -travistan

For some bizarre reason I really like Sometimes by Britney Spears. I can't think of any others at the moment, but occasionally I'll hear a really good pop song and have it rolling around my head for ages.

So this thread is basically a university Cheese night set list, yes?

Good, perhaps the first few times, but the twentieth it's just not.

I hate Pitchfork media. They haven't given a single E6 record a good review score. ...

Actually, I really don't like the idea of score based music reviews. Music is such a personal thing, its not like games were its far more clear cut if somethings good or bad. Its fine reading what they actually say and their breakdown of the album for a description, but if the reviewer has completely different taste to you then you can chuck their 'score' out of the window for what its worth. Half the time with music reviews its basically just whats fashionable to like at the time of the review that counts anyway.

Thats my second least favourite song ever. After Reef's Put Your Hands Up (I think thats its name - the one that would usually be played before or after Bryan Adams anyway on a cheese night).

I enjoyed both Kooks albums, especially their latest one.

They can't write lyrics for gooseberry fool, they're very genero indie rock, and whenever I see them live (on the television) I hate myself with all the posing and posturing.

Yeah, that's why Popmatters used to be my favourite review site a few years back. No scores.

Now, however, not only do they have scores, but a few of the reviewers seem to be possessed by the heed-up-yer-ain-arse spirit of DiS and yesteryear Pitchfork.

I quite like Pitchfork now, though. The days when you could find the likes of this or this kind of wankery are passed them. Now they seem to be conscious of the ease with which such verbosity and pomposity can overcome them, so they just do this instead.

puppetBoy wrote:Electric Six are by far my favourite ever band. Do I win?

Actually, I don't consider them a guilty pleasure - I think they're bloody fantastic, obviously. Unfortunately, everyone else considers them a guilty pleasure, at best. I struggle to think of many bands with a worse reputation amongst the general public.

Me: My fave band are Electric Six.
Anyone else: Really? That bunch that did Gay Bar? Ha ha!
Me: Y'know, they've done like several other albums...
Anyone else: Pfft. So? ... Hey, is that weird old woman from their video in the band?
Me: :fp:

Don't worry puppet boy, they're one of my favourite bands too. I think they actually get better with each album, I can't stop listening to 'Lucifer Airlines' and 'Randy's Hot Tonight!' from I shall exterminate.

They're also one of the best bands I've seen live the one time they played Belfast, I wish they would come back :(

Good news is their new album Flashy will be out on October 21st 2008 - More info.

Well back on topic, my guilty pleasure would have to be the Pet Shop Boys

Agreed!

I have three of the four Electric six albums anyway, each has a little something great on them. Chocolate pope of the third being the silliest I've heard in a while

Damn straight. I have absolutely no problems with anyone else's taste in music, and although I'll engage in a little light hearted joshing and mickey taking about it, I'm happy to recieve it back. I mean, at the end of the day, if music does what it sets out to and actually evokes some kind of positive feeling in you, why shouldn't you admit to liking it?

Unfortunately, this is something I've only learned very recently. :fp:

Phil Collins as well.

I've been a big Genesis fan ever since the release of their 1980 album, Duke.
Before that, I really didn't understand any of their work.
Too artsy, too intellectual.
It was on Duke where Phil Collins' presence became more apparent.
I think Invisible Touch was the group's undisputed masterpiece. It's an epic meditation on intangibility.
At the same time, it deepens and enriches the meaning of the preceding three albums.
Listen to the brilliant ensemble playing of Banks, Collins and Rutherford.
You can practically hear every nuance of every instrument.
In terms of lyrical craftsmanship, the sheer songwriting, this album hits a new peak of professionalism.
Take the lyrics to Land of Confusion.
In this song, Phil Collins addresses the problems of abusive political authority.
In Too Deep is the most moving pop song of the 1980s, about monogamy and commitment.
The song is extremely uplifting.
Their lyrics are as positive and affirmative as anything I've heard in rock.
Phil Collins' solo career seems to be more commercial and therefore more satisfying, in a narrower way.
Especially songs like In the Air Tonight and Against All Odds.
But I also think Phil Collins works best within the confines of the group, than as a solo artist, and I stress the word artist. This is Sussudio, a great, great song, a personal favorite

I still have a soft spot for some of the MOR pop i used to lisyen too during the mid 90s.
A bit of the corrs or the lighthouse family if the weather permits!

I also still listen to Alishas Attic on an almost religious basis as they are one of the greatest pop acts ever. More recently i got the new amy studt album off itunes which i waited 4 years for. I guarantee noone else has heard it.

Drunken Master is really Patrick Bateman? Who knew?

And I'm proud of all my musical tastes - when I was at Uni I used to get ribbed for loads of different records in my collection that didn't adhere to their NME-following snobby tastes (which was especially apparently during the Britpop years, which was in this time). Like a few other posters have said, if you like the music and it evokes some positive reaction in you then it shouldn't matter what you listen to.

Puppetboy - I completely sympathise with you - my fav. band is Depeche Mode, and despite them releasing about 13 albums since and having huge sell-out tours and massive selling singles in the USA etc etc all I get is 'oh yeah, they're the ones who did "just can't get enough" didn't they?' :fp:
