Muslim student sent racist ‘jokes’ by 118 118 joke service

A Muslim student has been left shocked after receiving two racist ‘jokes’ by a text service operated by 118 118.

Kameron Abbas, 21, used the new joke service run by the directory inquiries company after seeing it advertised on TV.

He was horrified when he got sent a message saying: “What’s the difference between ET and an Asian? ET got the message and went home.”

Stunned he then requested another, using his friend Imran Shah’s phone, and received: “How do you save a drowning Pakistani? Take your foot off his head.”

The student from the University of Central Lancashire is now considering legal action against the firm, which admitted a ‘breach of standards’.

He said: “We couldn't believe the response. It was more Bernard Manning than Harry Hill. It was disgraceful and these people should be reported.

“I was horrified at what we received and couldn'’t believe that 118 118 would send anything like what they did. These sorts of jokes are not funny at all,” he said.

Kameron, who lives in Accrington and whose family come from Pakistan, said he responded to 118 118 asking: “Do you send racist jokes?”

The company responded with a text that read: "does not send jokes of this kind".

A spokesman for 118 118 said: “This is a breach of our standards. We don't do jokes like that. This is a disciplinary issue and we would like to apologise. He should not have received it.”

The 118 118 brand is operated by The Number from three call centres based in Cardiff, Plymouth and Manila in the Philippines.

Launched in 2002, it provides a range of services including directory inquiries, cinema listings, train times, and a question and answer service.

Its new joke service has been featured in a series of televised advertisements featuring a pair of runners sporting headbands and moustaches.

It costs 60p to receive a joke which are then sent by text message to a mobile phone.

If these jokes weren't sent to a Muslim student but were still reported to the media, you can bet it'd be a tiny article in the corner of a random page in the middle.

Of course this is a bigger story though, the racist "jokes" were sent to a person who is a minority.

To be fair, I haven't heard that one before, and it is quite funny.

I'm assuming that they specified 'can you send me a racist joke?' or something along those lines, then reacted with outrage when they got what they asked for. It doesn't mention it in the article, maybe I'm wrong, but it just seems odd that they got two racist gags for no reason.

the photo in the sun seems to imply that they actually texted 118 118 for a "asian joke" - that should be said in reports as well. What kind of joke did they expect?
