When it's announced then we will talk about it. At the moment it is a figment of your imagination.

And the Gamecube Classic Mini will be better. Especially if they make the discs even smaller than the ones the GC had.

If folk like you had a bit more faith we'd have a Mini console already! You just need to BELIEVE IN BRITAIN NINTENDO!

(A Classic Mini Cube would be wonderful, though I'm not sure I'd be as bothered as I already own all the games I want, the console works fine, and saving is perfectly viable - all of which aren't true of the N64 sadly. Though how great would it be if the classic console used Switch style carts shaped like tiny button-sized GC discs!)

There were dozens of us... DOZENS, Ironhide! :x ;) .

8 bit "home computers" *were* the gaming scene in the UK in the period circa 1982 through 1988, with the 16 bit versions taking the battle against the rise of the consoles. I get mildly agitated when this history is washed over by the (generally) US-based gaming media :x .

Yep it's incredibly frustrating. But then the US thinking the world begins and ends with them is hardly a new and rare phenomenon.

The Verge, which is generally a decent enough tech website, ran an article recently about "how Android got big" which basically boiled down to "because Verizon". Yeah, that's right a mobile OS become globally dominant thanks to one US network that millions of users outside the States have probably never heard of. :fp:

I've had another look at the list of games on the Nintendo UK website. Every game listed on there for most retro consoles has been re-released on another Nintendo console. There are three consoles this isn't true of: the N64, the Game Boy Color, and the GBA.

What's interesting is that, notable omissions aside, they're fairly comprehensive lists with lots of third party inclusion. Star Wars and classic Disney titles are regular suggesting Nintendo and Disney are getting on fairly well right now.

Rare games are generally present (no Conker BFD or Goldeneye) including Perfect Dark on the Game Boy. It does seem like the list is specific i.e. not just a list of every game ever; but the consistency of titles from publishers across platforms is striking (again discounting some Rare games, but we can find explanations for these omissions e.g. no Bond license, Nintendo not fans of Conker, Microsoft keen to retain Killer Instinct IP etc)

It's conjecture but it seems odd to me that Nintendo would have someone go to the effort to curate this list without any purpose to it. It also seems like inclusion on the list comes about with consent of the publishers involved, meaning it's not as simple as just writing copy or reusing old copy - they have to seek permission for the games they want on there and they haven't got it all yet.

With the Smash direct incoming and a rumoured second direct shortly after, I'm wondering if Banjo and Kazooie will be the big final reveal of the former, with the latter giving us more details about how Nintendo will make more of its retro catalogue accessible. (I searched for possible upcoming MS announcements too but it seems they don't do announcements of announcements in the same way Nintendo do.)

If I had to wager at this point I'd make an ambitious wager and say we've an N64 Mini incoming with ability for DLC (e.g. buy the Star Wars games too!) and then Switch Online will have the Game Boy brand of games (original through to advance) added alongside the NES games.

Good points.

I wish Nintendo would offer a litteral virtual console service for the switch, as in you can buy the snes mini in software form and it contains all the same front end, features and games as the standalone for a similar price.

I'd be happy to buy 'N64 classic' for the switch for £40 if it was a self contained front end like the nes/snes. Or you can buy the console itself to run it standalone for £70

Rumours on ReceteYIKES that the N64 mini will be announced after the direct tonight.

I wasn't that interested before, but I'll pre-order one if it's coming out for Christmas as the thought of that on Christmas day along with the snes mini is just

I'm in for Mario 64 AGAIN but I'd love pilotwings as I never owned it.

:o . I'd be surprised if Nintendo announced it for a pre-Christmas release... we'd be back to PlayStation vs N64 console wars! It's odd as, for me, I preferred the PS at the time but, as the years have rolled by, I'm hugely fond of the N64.

I could see it being announced after today's direct for sure.

Announce that the N64 mini is coming out and will include Banjo Kazooie, followed by Banjo being announced in Smash. Or I guess it could happen the other way around!

Similar to the other classic systems I think the library on this will make or break it. Unlike the NES/SNES I already have a pretty extensive library of N64 titles so it would most likely take something particularly obscure or expensive to buy to swing it for me as a purchase. Although Nintendo fanboyism might just win over anyway. :shifty:

Yeah, the YouTube description says:

The Direct will be followed by a post-show Nintendo Treehouse: Live presentation, featuring live gameplay of Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu!, Pokémon: Let's Go, Eevee!, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, and Yoshi's Crafted World.

Well they're not going to put "Oh, and also the N64 Classic Mini as a surprise announcement".

Y'know what, N64 mini is starting to seem not worth watching a bunch of people I don't know playing a game when I could just be playing a game myself instead.

When was this other direct slated for? Or is it just a rumour at this point?

Nintendo rules out N64 Classic for foreseeable future

Nintendo’s holiday line-up does not include a new retro console, a surprise for fans and media who expected the 2016 NES Classic and 2017 SNES Classic retro consoles to be followed by a 2018 Nintendo 64 Classic. Fils-Aime isn’t one to announce new products on the fly during an interview, but he made it sound like the window for Nintendo doing such a device is closed for now.

“We were clear when we did the first two Classic series that, for us, these were limited time opportunities that were a way for us as a business to bridge from the conclusion of Wii U as a hardware system to the launch of Nintendo Switch,” he said. “That was the very strategic reason we launched the NES Classic system.” The Wii U had been fading fast by early 2016 and the Switch didn’t launch until early 2017.

“So while consumers may have been anticipating something, we view these as limited time opportunities. We’ve also now been very clear that as the consumer looks forward to engaging with our classic content that is going to happen more and more with the subscription service.

"Would you rule out an N64 Classic coming?” I asked.

“I would not ever rule something out,” he said, “but what I can tell you is certainly that’s not in our planning horizon.”

Guess that’s that, then.
