Yeah, if I've underslept the night before and feeling tired during the day I just force my way through it and catch up the next night.

Putting aside the grogginess, I reckon it also interferes with your daily body clock - so you're potentially just messing with the next few nights sleep by introducing an afternoon nap.

Different for old people of course (and those with similar issues) who only get clutches of a few hours patchy sleep during the night - due to getting up to go to the toilet, etc. By that point you sleep whenever you can no matter the time. But you want to delay that phase of your life as long as possible.

Sofa napping is bollocks, I wake up with a cricked neck or something after as little as 5 minutes.

A bed nap on a cold winters afternoon is an absolute delight, but something I try not to do for fear of not being able to sleep that night.

I would guess that people feeling sick or groggy after a nap are waking up from deep sleep/interrupting a sleep cycle.

I don't nap often but I do occasionally and feel better for it. Especially if I have a headache, having a nap seems to be a good cure for me.

I'm considering bypassing the "old" phase and jumping straight to dead 8-) .

My job requires a lot of concentration, and sometimes tiredness gets in the way. When I was office-based, all I could do was go out for a walk, which would wake me up but not remove the tiredness. As soon as I got back to the warm office, the drowsiness would creep back in. Often, the afternoon would be a virtual write-off. Since working from home, I have access to the ultimate utility: the 20-minute nap. As soon as the tiredness takes my concentration - which is very clearly identifiable - I set my phone timer to 20 minutes and go and lie down on the bed. Alarm goes off, I get up, and I'm refreshed enough to work properly. I take the time off my allocated break, so I'm not taking the piss with my employer. I can go weeks without having to take such a nap, but when I do need to, it's essential. A much better way of living/working.

Post-nap grogginess is almost funny in how weird it feels, once you've gotten over the fact your mouth tastes like crap, and you feel worse than you did before you fell asleep .

I've rarely found a nap has benefited me, apart from in pretty exceptional circumstances, usually involving illness or baby-related chaos. I will normally power through to bedtime, as I'd be raging if I found myself lying awake for ages due to having taken a nap earlier in the day.

How often do you normally nap? I usually end up waking up groggy or have a massive headache so I'd love to learn the proper strat. I saw rinks say 20 minutes before which works for him, just wondering if it fits the same for you?

I can only nap if I'm I'll but on the rare occasions they I have I feel absolutely gooseberry fool for doing so and then get punished with no sleep.

I should add that when the alarm goes off after 20 minutes, I really don't want to get up! I could easily drift back off, so I have to have the discipline to override that. Knowing that I have work to be getting on with helps, in that respect! It's like fast-charging your phone. That brief burst gives most of what you need to keep going, but a full charge is still necessary eventually.

Also, I am old.

I'll nap for over an hour and normally wake up spontaneously, so I'm probably sleeping for a full sleep cycle. A 20 minute nap is probably all light sleep, waking up before entering deep sleep. It's the waking up during deep sleep you want to avoid.

Fitbits and the like can track sleep phases so that might be a good way to monitor and adjust.

I only really nap when I'm unwell, otherwise I just don't do it. I love to sleep, and I hardly ever have trouble sleeping at night. I very often wake up very groggy though. Caffeine doesn't seem to effect me, so some mornings I'm struggling to just keep myself awake.

Ludo is gooseberry fool!
