New 3DS/3DS + 999 help required

Does anyone know if playing 999 on either the N3DS or 3DS affects the image quality in a negative way? Would I just be better off playing it on a regular DS?

Ideally I would like to buy one of the newer models as I haven't owned a Nintendo console in a while, and there'd be a bunch of games other than 999 I could buy. But my primary reason to get one is 999.

Thank you in advance for any help given. :)

No it doesn't.

I've been playing Ace Attorney Investigations 2 on my New 3DS and it looks good. The bigger screen will mean that the image isn't as sharp as it would be on a DS but that isn't a hugely noticeable issue. If I were you, I'd definitely get a New 3DS instead of a DS as you'll be able to play 3DS and DS games.

This is what I feared. Trying to look for general game comparisons on YT but they're not easy to come by. Thank you for the info and advice, though. Much appreciated!

So for you, the slightly lower res older DS games/larger screened 3DS trade off isn't worth it?

I haven't actually played a DS game on my New 3DS, so I can't really comment. I've always thought that XL screens look worse though, when seeing them. I imagine it'll be the same effect, but again I can't comment.

However, after a quick search to confirm I am not misremembering something, this should fix you up. Just hold down select on the menu screen when you launch the DS game and it will launch at the proper resolution (so it won't quite fill the screen, but will not be upscaled).

Same thing works with GB games from the virtual console, which is cool

Ooh. Yeah, that's a great solution!

Now I just have to make my mind up about which version and bundle, if any, to opt for. :slol: :D

Ta for the help guys.

I can't remember what I played 999 on, might have been my DS, 3DS or 3DSXL. Think it was probably the original 3DS and it looked fine. I'd go for a standard size 3DS or New 3DS if you're that worried about the image scaling.

I've had a 3DS and New 3DS XL and didn't have any problems with the image quality on the latter.

I switch between my New 3DS and New 3DS XL consoles as the former has homebrew so that I can play emulators on it. Both are comfortable to hold, even with big hands, but the visuals are a bit sharper on the non-XL model due to the smaller screen size. I was very happy with my New 3DS and only got the XL because it was the Majora's Mask one.

Amazon will have the Xenoblade and Monster Hunter New 3DS bundles as lighting deals at 12:30 so you might get a good deal there. You can get the deal half an hour earlier with Prime.

Noooo. Dammit. It's about a £50 saving that. Already bought so much stuff this week and still have a blender to get.

I play all my ds games on n3ds xl full screen mode (including 999). Never seemed like an issue to me and have never felt the urge to sacrifice screen real estate for higher fidelity. And I play lots of text heavy games.

I really couldn't see sense in buying anything but a new 3ds/xl for this purpose and using the semi secret native resolution mode if you want.

The portfolio for the 3ds is pretty staggering if you've never had one.

The image is slightly upscaled for the 3DS screen, which can impact sprite based games.

I played Investigations 2 exclusively on 3DS XL, and I've played 999 on DSi and 3DS XL. If you are going straight from one to the other the difference will be noticeable, but I can't say I find any issue with it. I vastly prefer the larger screen, even with sprite based games, but it will be a matter of preference.

I recommend playing DS games on 3DS at the native resolution (done by holding start or select when launching the software). Otherwise, they're upscaled and look alright if rather blurry, though obviously you get a bigger image and no black borders.

EDIT: Also, enjoy 999! It does have some wonky prose in places, yet it's still one of the best narratives you'll ever experience in a game. Wonderful, mind bending stuff :)
