Playing MGS for the first time? You are a lucky man.

I'm going to start my full series play through shortly. I've never completed 3 or 4, for some reason the setting of 3 never appealed to me, I've given up on it a couple of times now.

Right now I'm playing Dust on PS4. The art is lovely but the game play so-so, really just makes me want to play through Guacamelee! again.

I can definitely see how lucky it is to be in this position now that I'm really getting into the gameplay. Even more fortunate is the fact that I know very little about the storyline so everything will come as a surprise to me. I just hope that the other games go on sale again quite soon so that I have the option of playing them before TPP is released.

MGS's story is awesome. Before that abomination of a second game.

The Twin Snakes

Psycho Mantis :o I remember reading about how he makes your controller vibrate so that bit wasn't lost on me as I play with rumble off but the whole experience was amazing.

As this is a GameCube title, he talked about how I like to play Nintendo games and that I'd been playing Sunshine and Melee. I thought that he just named random Nintendo titles until I realised that I had indeed run those games on Dolphin in the past. It then came back to me that Mantis also reads your memory card!

The actual battle itself was difficult because I knew that I had to swap controllers but I thought that using port two would suffice. Mantis beat Snake a couple of times before the colonel used the codec to say that I needed to put the controller in port three. Juggling between ports three and four did the trick as Mantis fell without too much difficulty after that.

Seeing Mantis' last words actually made me feel a little bad for the mad murderer. The characters and overall story in this are truly fantastic, as is the attention to detail which was outstanding in the two examples I mentioned above. I'm really looking forward to playing more and it makes Kojima's departure all the sadder. Hopefully he gets a studio up and running to deliver more incredible experiences. Only now do I realise what a big deal he is.

Thanks to the wonders of save states, I've stopped playing just as Meryl gets shot. I know that I haven't really been using spoiler tags thus far but this feels like it deserves one. Seeing Mantis, her and Snake dance around her feelings for Snake got me more involved in their stories and I'll be sad if she does actually die. I literally saved and quit at the point that she gets shot in the knee so I'll definitely be getting back to this as soon as possible.

Started Watch Dogs after getting a lend of it. Played an hour or so. It was alright. Game clearly is cross gen. I am not sure I like the graphics. Gameplay seems interesting enough.

I *like* Watch Dogs! The characters are a bit dull but the environments are terrific, the gadgets are cool and it all plays pretty slick. I had fun and I need to return to it soon.

Yeah, I liked Watch Dogs on the whole, good game.

Anyway, I've started playing Assassin's Creed Chronicles:China this afternoon after picking it up for next to nothing in a sale a little while ago. So far it's excellent! Very much in the Shadow Complex/Metroid style, it's pretty challenging at times but never hard enough to piss me off (or at least not yet anyway). Thoroughly enjoyed the first couple of hours I've put in to it.

I called off his players' names as they came marching up the steps behind him....All nice guys. They'll finish last. Nice guys. Finish last.

I'm gonna let someone decide what I play next. I'll go buy the first answer I get so make it good.

Uncharted 3 to finally finish the trilogy ready for when 4 arrives.
Metroid Prime for the first time with the intention of actually finishing it.

Megaman X Command Mission on GameCube. I was rather enjoying this up until just now when I've hit a huge difficulty brick wall in the shape of the final chapter.

The Twin Snakes

I stopped playing this afternoon after Sniper Wolf was put out of action, permanently. It's a testament to the writing, voice acting and atmosphere that I could feel sorry for her even after she shot down Meryl. Trying to snipe her is one of my favourite boss fights in the game.

Now that I think about it, all the boss fights have been stellar in their own ways. The whole helicopter section, from rappelling down the communications tower to hunting Liquid with stinger missiles, was a fantastic experience.

My only criticism about the game is that the controls have been a bit fiddly. The preceding chase through communications tower, as Snake makes his way to the roof, was a bit frustrating as I couldn't work out how to shoot up a set of stairs. I'm trying not to use the first person mode to get a closer experience to the PS1 original.

Anyway, such niggles are so few and far between that this is still, overall, one of the best games that I've ever played. It's incredible to think that this is an 11 year old remake of a 17 year old game. Little touches like soldiers noticing footsteps in the snow or Snake being able to hold up a guard always amaze me. The latter is something that I discovered by mistake before I stopped playing in the blast furnace room. I was trying to strangle a guard but had the pistol equipped so Snake held him up instead.

Mortal Kombat (360)

Finally finished the Challenge Tower thing. Ended up skipping quite a few towards the end though as I just couldn't be arsed. Got to the point where they weren't fun anymore. Might go back to the Arcade Ladder every now and then to complete it with every character (about halfway at the moment) and hopefully unlock all of the Krypt (probably about 3/4 the way there currently).

I've said it before but I actually prefer the remake, love the redone cutscenes, they're ridiculously OTT yet great.

The OTT stuff is fantastic but it doesn't devalue the more serious moments because it feels like there's enough of a gap between them to make the contrast not feel jarring. One of my favourites is Ocelot during the torture scene.

Don't even think about using autofire

Now, for what I just played:

I was surprised that Naomi Hunter wasn't Naomi hunter and my already piqued interest in the story shot up even higher. Whenever Liquid spoke, he did sound similar to The Master but I thought that it was either the same voice actor doing multiple roles, like some cartoons, or just a big coincidence. My reaction to what followed Snake arming Metal Gear Rex is outlined well in those two gifs :o

As I was backtracking to shape the PAL key for disarmament, I did think that Ocelot and Liquid could have always known that Snake was listening and wanted him to succeed so that Rex is armed. Despite being right, I was so very wrong about how the story would actually pan out  This story is actually better than most secret agent films, let alone a video game.

Going back to OTT moments in The Twin Snakes, I really thought that Kojima/Silicon Knights/whoever missed a trick by not having him say 'we're The Twin Snakes' instead of just 'we're twins'. I'm guessing that all the audio is taken straight from the PS1 version, which is why this wasn't done, but, if it was re-recorded, it would have been perfect to hear that. I did enjoy Liquid nonchalantly prancing about on the railings as he recounted his tale to Snake. That really fit in well with the whole OTT theme.

I've always wondered how Snake would beat Metal Gear Rex when I've thought about this game. Bosses of the game did confuse me in general as I thought that they'd be the low point, kind of like Human Revolution, given that the game is based around stealth. Thankfully, I've never been more wrong. I've enjoyed them all, though Vulcan Raven is very likely my least favourite, so at this point I'm looking forward to trying to tackle Rex.

Hopefully I should be able to finish this game in the next couple of days. I'm so very keen to play more so I'll try to squeeze in some game time after work and around Mario Kart/other evening things. I'd lament not playing the PS1 original on my Vita but I know that it wouldn't be as enjoyable trying to play at work, even during lunch.

I was thinking about The Twin Snakes today, as I've never played it, yet played the original absolutely loads. Some pop trivia -

The voices were re-recorded because the originals were not recorded in a sound-proof booth, so the higher quality audio that the GameCube offered highlighted imperfections in the existing audio.
David Hayter (Solid Snake) paid for all of the original voice actors to come back out of his own salary. What a guy.

tbh, some of them didn't try very hard  The performances in the original were a lot better.

The man behind the legend is a true legend  I noticed that he isn't voicing Snake in Ground Zeroes. What's up with that? Just say spoilers if the explanation is spoiler related and I'll look it up another time.

I hadn't been planning to play the PS1 version any time soon but I find myself wanting to do so the more that I play this. I'm enjoying it so much that I wouldn't mind another playthrough quite soon, which is something I avoid in games due to the size of my library. Given that I want to (try to) finish the other five games before TPP, I'll save the PS1 version for another time. Nonetheless, I'm excited!

They got rid of him in favour of Keifer Sutherland but some people are still convinced that he'll be making a cameo as Solid Snake.
