Oh boy, yes. I definitely spend more time browsing and reading about games than playing them, although I'm in a phase where I feel that I want to play stuff at the moment. Perhaps you could try just selecting a small number of titles and focus on them, Milner? Personally I find that I never really get into a game if I'm juggling more than a couple.

A few hours into Transistor. I wish there was something more substantial with this. It is fairly linear, combat is good, but there's little else in terms of gameplay.

It's still a very good game, just not something that I feel is worthy of the hype so far.

Just finished the first chapter of Yakuza 0 and it's utter bollocks. Is the whole game just a series of exposition-heavy cutscenes sporadically interspersed with a few bits of sub-standard combat?

True enough. I’m sure it’s probably been said before but we really are spoilt for riches nowadays...especially if you are lucky enough to have a good disposable income (or a credit card). Back in the day it felt that a single game would be rinsed and rinsed over months on end and you got to know it inside out...just seems that nowadays once you get stuck or disillusioned in one bit of a game it’s all too easy to bin it off and move on to the next one in the pile, or even just research and read up online about what game you are going to buy to add to the pile.

Just to add, at least for me I think part of the problem is not necessarily having the time to commit to long sessions. The problem then with story games is that if I haven’t touched it for a few days I’ve totally forgot what’s going on and feel compelled just to restart all over. I think certain games like Hitman etc that tend to elevate mechanics over story etc are better if you are time poor and struggling to get into narrative fpdtiven titles.

It isn't just that, I feel that having a backlog puts pressure on you to get through the current game quickly rather than just enjoying the current game. This is why I'm trying to get to a point where I have just one game in my backlog. Doing quite well so far and have only purchased one game this year but completed 7.

I tend to try to stick to 1 game at a time and focus on it, earlier this year I was doing ok and playing lots of indies on Switch but maybe I’ve reached a point where I’m a bit burned out.

I have enjoyed joining in GR’s Mario Kart, Rocket League and Splatoon 2 nights so I think I will stick with them for now and see how things go. I am also playing some rogue like games (Death Road to Canada, Enter the Gungeon) they are pretty good as they are run based so you can attempt a run, see how far you get and then put it down again and have another go sometime later.

E3 usually ignites my gaming passion so perhaps this year will do the same.

Yes, this is another good point, I’ll play a game but then look at another and think “I would like to play that” then I find myself trying to rush through stuff rather than take time and enjoy it at a leisurely pace

Good point. Funny thing is that I (and probably many others) live my whole bloody life like that so I suppose my gaming habits are but a reflection of the big picture. I’m a runner and quite recently realised that whenever I ran I was always a mile a head of myself in my head...almost like picturing the run over whilst it was still happening. This created quite a lot of stress and tension and now I specifically try and be more mindful when running, taking in my surrounding etc. Maybe off on a tangent a touch but I think maybe like you highlighted it’s easy to get like this with games...just wanting to move forward and get onto the next thing.

Whoah! That's pretty deep, box, but... perfectly true. In gaming terms, last week I got frustrated with Pro Evo Soccer because the results weren't going my way. After having a bit of a strop, I changed my thinking and focussed on enjoying the gameplay and the moments in the match. It has worked wonders - now I don't really care about the outcome and just have fun along the way.

Oh, and welcome to GRcade - the fluffiest best strangest oddest most games + stuff place on the web :toot: .

It’s exactly why I ditched COD about 5 years ago. I became so goddam obsessed with my KD ratio that it was driving me potty. I wasn’t even a good player so it never even mattered but the whole game revolved around that bloody ratio and nothing else.

I've mentioned before that I've tried the whole 'complete one game before moving onto the next' but I found it puts too much pressure on trying to plough through my back catalogue and in turn sucks some of the fun out playing.

I much prefer to just play whatever takes my mood, jumping from one game to the next. Completing a game isn't a priority. Having fun is. :D

This is the problem with the backlog and why it is best not to have one.

As long as I don't look at it as something to be ploughed through and completed I don't mind having a back catalogue. If I'm in the mood for playing a particular game and/or genre of game then I'm more than covered.

Did a fair bit of AC Origins yesterday. It's such a polished, gorgeous looking game. Combat, perhaps the biggest let down of previous AC titles, is thoroughly satisfying. Spear and bow being my weapons of choice.

I started with the spear but use a kick ass sword and shield now as my main weapons.

I walk around a lot in this game just looking at things, It's very VERY pretty.

A spear is particularly good on horse back for taking out more than one opponent. I actually unlocked a trophy for taking out three soldiers in one sweeping arc. The only thing I wish you could do with a spear is throw it. That would have been superb being able to charge someone and launching a bloody great spear at them at the last moment.

Discovery Mode is perfect for this. I just embark on long, untroubled walkabouts. I'd like to do a massive journey from one side of the map to the other. It's also perfect for photo mode, too. You won't be attacked by anything and you'll never die. A 'Tourist Mode' if you will. See all the sights! I wish more games offered this.

The game is a marvellous showcase for the One X and 4K HDR and the little extra's like people taking building materials about or doing plays really does add a lot.

Put a couple of hours into Xenoblade this morning, finally found where I was going wrong (completely missed a dam I was meant to unblock) so I've at least advanced the story a little. Did anyone else find the battles really slow? I keep upgrading weapons, arts and the like but enemies still seem to take an age to take down unless its a 3 on 1 situation with the enemy a fair few levels below my party. Do they all just have masses of health or am I just not maximising my party's potential?
