Seeing some of you guys talking about The Witness and combining that with the PS Store sale price made me decide to jump on board and start playing, too :toot: .

Man, it's making my brain feel rubbish already. "Invisible" lines... :o  . But I've just got the "Symmetry" trophy and I actually shouted out "yeah!" ... I had to draw stuff onto paper to help my brain out  .

I'm finding The Witness to be an incredibly frustrating experience. The puzzles are OK, and the way it teaches you the logic rules without direct instruction is really good, but I'm not getting the satisfaction others describe from finally solving a puzzle that's previously had me stumped like I've seen others describing.

If I can't see a solution, it annoys me. There's only a certain number of ways the line can go, and for whatever reason, I can't work it out. Then when I do finally get it, I just feel annoyed that I couldn't spot it sooner, as it's not like I've had to pick up any new information to get to the answer. Combine this with some of the puzzles seemingly offering no reward or progression for completing them, and I wonder why I'm doing any of it. Most puzzles are obviously linked to lighting up the beacons that shine on the mountain, but there are others that seem to do nothing. There was a series in an orchard, for example, which eventually unlocks a gate, but then, there was nothing to do once through the gate, not even any audio logs to pick up.

I'm currently playing Dandy Dungeon, a freemium RPG of sorts from the guy who made Little King's Story. It's *wonderful*.

I follow the Onion Games twitter (because it's bloody hilarious) and downloaded it after seeing a few screenshots expecting it to be some sort of by-the-numbers puzzle/dungeon crawler hybrid and oh how wrong I was

Almost to the true end of Stein's Gate 0, and I'm sick to strawberry floating death of it. There is an okay time-travel plot here, but Jesus Christ, it is drawn out in the slowest way possible, and it constantly re-iterates itself with circular passages and banalities. It has no energy at all and I'm only playing at this point out of obligation.

The writing basically goes like this:

As I walked up the stairs to the lab I wondered if Daru had managed to hack into CERN
I opened the door and heard the clacking of keys from the back room
Daru was at his computer, looking intently at the screen

Itaru: Okarin! Hey man.
Okabe: Daru. How are you progressing? Can you get into CERN?
Itaru: No problem.
Okabe: ...For a super hacka like you
Itaru: It's hacker, man.
Okabe: So?
Itaru: I got into CERN
Okabe: ...! You got into CERN?!
I couldn't believe it...
He hacked into CERN

All the damn time. It's absolutely horrible.

Subnautica.

I've sunk around 30 hours into this now, and it's still dripfeeding me just enough to keep me interested.

For those not in the know, it's a crafting/survival game but underwater. I pirated it originally and it impressed me so much I whacked down the 15 phonebooks needed for a legit copy. And it's great. It's a handcrafted environment so there's no randomness to your progression: you make stuff, learn where common materials come from, make more stuff, move further away from the starting area, find more exotic stuff, find blueprints to utilize more exotic materials etc etc. By the end of 15 hours I had a massive underwater base and an even larger submarine, so large that I can dock my 1 man submersible inside it.

However it's losing some of it's sheen. There's no map (or maybe I haven't found the blueprint yet...) so I'm forever forgetting where the interesting new biomes are. You can make beacons to guide you, but they take up valuable inventory space. Worse, the next big base I'm suppose to find...isn't where the extremely vague instructions said it was. Which is extremely frustrating. But then, just as I get bored, I'll stumble on another abandoned base, or another escape pod, or another biome, totally by accident. Which hooks you again.

It really is worth a punt.

Another day, another grumble from your truly.

Currently playing Rainmasters in Gran turismo 6 (international A).

As you might of guessed you will be driving in the rain. So I went & bought some intermediate tyres (for wet racing), started & it won't let you use those specific tyres for that specific event. You are forced to use "Racing hard".

Now that is some grade A game design right there, give yourself a pat on the back Polyphony.

strawberry floating hell  :fp:

Edit: better give myself a face palm, seems I can change them once I'm actually in the menu selection on the race.

:fp: :fp: :fp:

You, my mate and I owned those Battlefield games our squad got most flags in each round. I usually end up in top 5 now in each game, just like B4. Can't wait for new maps.

jiggles wrote:I've always found it pretty egregious that I've ever played through Resident Evil 4, so I went back and tried the Ultimate HD version on PC, but the controls were an utter travesty, so I NOPEd right out of it.

But, gambling that a console version would have more care and attention placed on its controls, I bought the game once again on PS4 (now the 5th copy of the game I own). To my delight, it does in fact feel much better, and even looks better, so that's a relief.

Anyway, I'm taking my time to savour it, and I'm only on 1-2, but I just discovered that for the 20-odd times I've gone through the beginning of the game, I've never once done it "correctly". What everyone praises as the highlight of the game, and one of the best opening sequences period, I always found was overrated. In my approach to the village, I have, on every single playthrough, spotted the fork in the path, and hung back behind it so that enemies are funnelled into a choke point and nobody can get behind me. They come at me in single-file, and though it's rough on ammo, it's easy to dispatch all of them and then the bell rings and they go away.

I watched a video of it today, and it was completely different. The player goes into a house and a significant cutscene plays as the villagers swarm around outside, and a guy with a chainsaw shows up. They start laying siege to the house by climbing to the upstairs with a ladder, and the player barricades themselves inside before having to deal with the tightening hold on the house by the guys outside, all while an utterly menacing dude with a chainsaw is lurking around.

And I'd seen none of it before. No siege. No ladder defense. No chainsaw guy. No excitement. No nothing. Just a bunch of farmers dumbly running through a choke point and getting massacred.

Wow.

The chainsaw guy Dr Salvador is hanging around by one of the exit gates to the left of the belltower when you first enter the village. You can kill him with grenades and headshots if you're particularly skilled then go into the shotgun house to summon him again. Double the cash rewards.

Ahah, as much as I love the genre that is a common problem with visual novels unfortunately. I don't remember finding S;G 0 that bad in that respect, though it's definitely not as focused as the first game.

Below Kryll - PC

Got this for under a pound on Steam and was very pleasantly surprised. Mechanically its a pixel-art 2d action platformer, but with an LBP-style focus on user generated content with a collaborative rating system which gives good level makers more resources to make more content. I haven't played much but it seems very Mario Maker-esque but with more options to write dialogue for NPCs, quests, that sort of thing. Its been out a while so I imagine the community isn't huge, but there's a decent amount of content already there and even at normal price its under a fiver.

I'm currently back in the world of Resident Evil 5 - this time the PS4 HD version. I really do like this game. I had it on 360 and PC and it looks as good as ever on PS4. Sheva Alomar remains my favourite RE character - despite her wonky AI and occasional loot theft. She's so damn sexy, she gets a pass from me  .

Image

A shame the game never goes anywhere with the relationship between her and Chris.

I love the structure of the game - it's quite possible to grind your way up to a set of powerful weapons before taking on a challenging boss level and I appreciate the obvious help this gives less confident players like me.

It's daft, it's clearly nonsense, but it's one of the most underappreciated RE games, imo. Never understood all that controversy back in the day about the game's African setting. It's atmospheric and - in a fantasy world full of blood-crazed infected, monsters and hooded, axe-wielding maniacs - it all just adds to the game's overall ambience.

Will Sheva ever make another appearance in a RE game? Too much to hope for? :(

I'm still dipping in and out of The Witness and, whilst I'm enjoying it, boy is it tough. My brain actually feels like it's aching :fp:  .

I like how you can wander around at will and tackle different puzzles. The game offers zero help and it can be frustrating when you get stuck for quite a while, but this is tempered by the sense of satisfaction once you do progress. It's a very clever game and I can see myself dipping in and out of it for a long time.

Beyond that, I'm slowly trying to get back into Elder Scrolls Online (housing launches 21 February on console :toot: ). I enjoy playing it and I'm now up to level 21, but I still feel like I know barely anything about the game... I think I need to seek out a couple of guides on YouTube to get my head around "what things mean" and "how to do stuff".

Just started "The Vanishing of Ethan Carter". The graphics are excellent, I don't think I've ever said that about a game before. The problem is though, I don't have a strawberry floating clue what I'm supposed to be doing or where I'm supposed to be going. The game seems to let you go off in all directions, hopefully this is going to give me a sense of direction before too long or it will become very frustrating.

I haven't got passed the few buildings after the first bridge for the same reasons. I'll hopefully go back to it at some point but I bought it for peanuts and it hasn't grabbed me yet so I in my pile of shame at the moment.

Popped this on for half-hour last night and got past a tricky puzzle that had stumped me before. Sometimes it's good to just walk away, take a break and return with a fresh mind!

I started it again using a guide. I would have missed so much otherwise. Prior to using the guide I wouldn't have even known some of the puzzles were actually puzzles!
