Onechanbara Z2 Chaos - PS4

Much like DOA and Bayonetta, it is hard to talk positively about this game without seeming to be making excuses for the obvious content. I got this on sale after seeing a video by Jim Sterling showing and saying that there's a lot more going on beneath the surface, and he was right.

This series started as one of the Simple 2000 series on PS2, low-budget japanese indie games which also began Earth Defence Force. There are 4 playable characters with on average 2 main weapons and a sub-weapon and you can switch between them on the fly and often mid-combo, each weapon having its own moveset. Each character has a special attack meter as well as a gauge which fills to activate a high-damage mode or super sayan-style transformation.

Balancing all of this while fighting loads of monsters and enormous multi-stage bosses means you stop really paying attention to the...obvious things. It really is a b-movie Bayonetta but there's a lot more going on than its trashy exterior would suggest.

Watch Dogs still. I haven't moved the story on much yet, I just finished the first mission or so of Act 2 but I'm having a good time clearing up the side investigations. I especially liked the QR code puzzles very much like the Riddler puzzles from Arkham City where you had to line up parts of the question mark.

I'm a little confused by a couple of the investigations however as I've done all the initial legwork but the final part isn't unlocking namely the Weapons Trade and Missing Persons missions... I'm assuming they must crop up later.

Sokobond

Minimalist chemistry based puzzler where you must move and rearrange individual atoms to form increasingly complex molecules. Starts off fairly easy with puzzles requiring little planning but soon ramps up to Spacechem levels of soul crushing difficulty albeit without the fiddly production line building bits.

around halfway through it now and its becoming incredibly difficult but that feeling of satisfaction when you finally solve a tough level is hard to beat.

Dead Island Definitive Edition

Played the original on PS3 and loved it, seen the 2 remasters for a tenner on the Xbox store and couldn't resist

Looks really good for a remaster and plays just as good as ever, once you get to the town the difficulty seems to ramp up a bit and the sewers can be creepy at times, really enjoying it so far

Max Payne - PC

I've played the first parts of this many times around release but never made much progress with it, picked it up on Steam a while back so decided I might have a go at actually completing it.

So far it's still about as much fun as I remember, diving round corners in bullet time and shooting someone in the face is as satisfying as ever. It looks like arse but then it is a 16 year old game, shows how far we've come as I remember being blown away by the screenshots in PC Gamer back when it was first announced!

I'm playing on the easiest difficulty as it won't let me select anything else yet it's still bloody hard, two good hits from an enemy and you're dead, thank god for quick saving!

PUBG. Still getting to grips with it and dying a lot, but love it all the same. Even better when played as a squad with a few guys from work.

Just started Dying Light again. Don't think I gave it a fair crack of the whip last time I tried it. Enjoying it a bit more this time.

Forza 4. Our last remaining indie game store is closing down so I picked this up for £1 along with a handful of other titles. Still one of the best racers I've ever played.

TW3. Still plugging along nicely.

BF 1 online. Quality stuff.

I bought this in the Easter sale. I really quite like it. Not so much a b-movie Bayonetta as more a grindhouse version.

Tits and ass and lo-fi environments aside there's actually a really good game in there. A lot of fun.

DiRT Showdown
Really motoring (ha) through this now. Good to have regular unlockables which adds a bit of incentive, as the events and locations do get samey. Racing is still good though, not particularly challenging, but entertaining. A good game to play for either a quick race or two or a longer session.

Trine
I've tried to get into this on at least two previous occasions, and just couldn't. For some reason I got the urge to play it last night and it just clicked, and I spent about 3 hours on it. Looks lovely, sounds lovely, and the continual evolution of abilities and associated puzzles keeps it feeling fresh and engaging. Really feels like it's moving along at a pace though, almost concerned it's going to finish 'too soon', which would be a rare complaint from me. I do have Trine 2 waiting in the wings as well though. Lovely when a game takes you by surprise like this and has you hooked.

PES 2015
Still pretty addicted to Master League...my only real gripe with the game is the collision detection feels off at times, and quite frequently (at least once a match, usually more) I'll tackle somebody, they'll fall over, and then my player will get stuck on/behind them and can't reach the ball. It's so annoying. Has this been rectified in later games?

Such a shame this has been largely forgotten: it's great. Getting stuck outside at night is utterly terrifying.

Night time is terrifying. I didn't realise that by pressing the triangle button while running you look briefly behind and catch a glimpse of loads of zombies chasing you. strawberry floating horrid! :dread:

I stopped playing it at that point and never went back to it.

I can't handle scary games at all, I don't know why but no other form of media has such effect on me.

Love a good scare myself, and with so few films dishing out genuine scares video games is where it's at. This is why as pant wetting as I'm finding Dying Light I'll soldier on. Which reminds me, I must get back to Soma at some point.
