I have been playing online to a large extent, Octo. There is a single-player offline campaign (and you can use a photo tool in it which I'm keen to try out) but I only completed the first section of that before venturing into the multiplayer online mode. The online mode is easy to jump into and play plus there are additional multiplayer options coming soon.

I played a bit more yesterday and, for the first time, I got the most takedowns in a race :) . I felt like a boss and started grooving to the music :datass: :toot:  :fp: .

The SP game is perfect, imo. I spend all my time there - it's nice that playing online is not a requirement to unlock loot boxes and get all those trinkets and upgrades. I did try an online game but - of course - got hammered instantly by the opposition. With SP you can either play the 'campaign' tracks or customize the game to your own tastes and race against tenacious AI the way you want, where, when and how you want (in all the same online modes). It's a nice touch and appreciated.

The Satisfaction of beating a real person at anything online is better than a bot or AI and no matter how bad you are, there's always someone worse.

That all said, I do enjoy Overwatch co-op with my daughter vs AI, but even then we tried some proper online and actually won, she's quite the whizz using Reaper.

Yes but some people just like to take things at their own pace.

Anyway!

I'm playing Shadow Of Mordor. I quite liked it, then the combat system sort of clicked and now I really like it.

Lots of ideas clearly inspired by other games, but they're all executed well. Ran well on the base PS4, runs really well on the Pro.

I can't get into it, is it all grey and brown? Very disappointing. The problem was I had SoM and AC Origins at same time and Origins is very colorful, was hard go back to drab Mordor.

Yeah, but... it's Mordor isn't it? Were you expecting unicorns?

But fair enough, SoM 'borrows' a few things from AC (and Arkham Asylum). There's no need to play both although SoM's Nemesis System is great.

edit: Also SoM only cost me eight English pounds.

The problem with SoM's Mordor is that it's so...boring. I get that the devs were obviously limited somewhat by the setting but the two main areas are so stunningly dull, with brown reused textures and uninspiring locales, that the Nemesis system remains the only noteworthy aspect of that game. Thankfully it's a once in a generation aspect, but still.

Completed the first act of Quantum Break. Wasn't overly keen at first but the story is now looking interesting. What I wasn't expecting was the episodes! Clearly the people behind this want to make films rather than games.

That's often the case. It used to be called 'Hollywood Envy', maybe it still is. When I started out at Psygnosis none of the artists were interested in making video games, they just saw it as a stepping stone to working for companies like Industrial Light and Magic.

It's also why video games have credit sequences.

Fun to play though. It's reliable rather than spectacular.

I don't agree. With a bot there is a well defined and unwavering ability they are playing to. If you beat them you know it's because you are better than that level. With a person there is no easy way to gauge how good they are, and even if you do win you can put it down to them making a mistake and playing badly rather than you doing well. It's also unlikely you can get consistency in who you are playing against. With a bot I can repeatedly play against the same difficulty over and over until I improve enough to beat it, with online that isn't the case. That's what I find most satisfying in videogames - failing on the same thing over and over until I eventually learn it and get good enough to beat it.

I've felt similar in the past regarding a win being because of your opponent making a mistake and playing badly rather than through your own merits, however the same could be said the other way around; you were playing well such that you didn't make those mistakes. Unfortunately, as people, human error will always be a factor, but you'll find top players at games are generally better at consistency because of practice, and the ability to repeatedly win because of that is rewarding. In a lot of cases as well, human players are better than the AI of any given game. A limitation of AI, at least in a lot of games, is they don't always learn, or don't have the reasoning and fundamental understanding that humans have regarding pressure, reads or adaptability. As such, even the 'hardest' of AIs become easy when you find that one flaw to abuse.

Can't remember what the event was, but I saw online someone brought their modded TAS AI to a Melee event and literally everyone struggled to even take 1 stock. In cases like this, I agree that AI can be better for improvement, but at the end of the day, it's all about overcoming that 1 obstacle so you can move onto the next, regardless of AI or player.

I like the finding a flaw and exploiting it part of fighting AI, it almost makes them puzzle-like. Pattern recognition is fun.

But yes I'm not really into fighting games or competitive

So you won't play the new Smash with me? :<

Oh yeah the pattern recognition is fun, it can be done really well. I mean, Hollow Knight has amazing fights. I was thinking more in cases where there's like unintentional flaws to exploit that ruin the experience.

You need to see this to appreciate it. The episodes in Quantum Break are basically episodes from a TV series, filmed segments rather than CGI. Having gone into this game blind, coming across the first episode was a surprise. They are apparently 22 minutes long (there are 4 of them).

When one has just started and your dinner is on the table they are slightly strawberry floating inconvenient.

I think I skipped most of the episodes because they all turned up at the wrong times :shifty: Was a pretty funky way of doing it, though. Remedy have always been quite a cinematic developer, so it'll be interesting to see where they go with Control
