PostNew 'digital magazine' coming to PSN from Future...
by KK » Wed Sep 24, 2008 11:27 am

And so it begins.

Computerandvideogames.com wrote:Future (that's us by the way) has signed a deal Sony Computer Entertainment UK to create a weekly digital magazine available exclusively through the PlayStation Network.

According to Will in the press department, "The digital magazine will enable gamers in the UK to download interactive, high definition editorial content directly onto their PlayStation 3 consoles from the PlayStation Network - a first for the UK games industry. The pioneering weekly product will be available to UK PlayStation 3 owners in early 2009 and is expected to subsequently roll-out to other European territories."

Ray Maguire, senior vice president and managing director of SCE UK, said, "As PlayStation 3 moves the gaming experience to a more social and competitive online environment, so the natural development in line with our consumers' choice of media is to produce a companion publication in the digital realm. Future is best placed to meet this challenge and produce a perfect partner to the Official PlayStation magazine delivered via the PlayStation Network."

Our MD Robert Price added, "We are very excited to further strengthen our relationship with Sony, working together on this ground-breaking product. As the publisher of Official magazines and digital content for Sony PlayStation in the US and UK, we are creating powerful integrated media solutions for readers and advertisers across different platforms, in print and online. This product will provide a unique way for advertisers to connect directly with gamers through their consoles using the very latest high definition content."

A job well done, Looking forward to seeing it. [strawberry floating Lol - KK]

I doubt this is going to be free. Anyone want to vote on how long it'll be before exclusive demos are added? You knew something similar to the US service was coming our way. We've had it too good with free content, for too long.

You can see Beta keys and demos being added to this and charged for, just a matter of time.

As I have stopped buying magazines for some time I do not mind buying this every year and if there are exclusives demos the decision is an easy one for me!

Yes, and the whole idea stinks. Qore has already had it's fair share of exclusive demos and betas, and there's no way I'm going to pay for them.

Press Release wrote:Future and SCE UK will work with third parties to incorporate exclusive content – only available to subscribers who purchase the weekly digital magazine.

It will also offer advertisers the opportunity to promote their products to millions of UK gamers who are registered to the PlayStation Network in the UK. It will provide advertisers with exclusive branded areas, product showcases and high definition media.

Oh Joy.

There's a rather disquieting article over on TheSixthAxis about this:

Today, we’re pleased to announce the death of TSA and here are the details of our killer.

Future Publishing, Bath.

That’s right, the publisher of the ever lovely Edge magazine and a load of other shite is to release a weekly, on-console only PS3 magazine. A bit like that Qore thingy, only this one will be good. Maybe.

VideoGaming247 has more info, but let us paraphrase for you.

It’s going to be a powerful integrated media solution.

Despite thorough research, we’ve yet to ascertain the problem that this is the solution to. Unless, you know, you’re one of those spend-happy numpties that has to buy the latest ‘thing’ and then spend hours defending and justifying the purchase you know to be a waste of cash.

It’s a unique way for advertisers to connect with gamers.

This means it’s another opportunity for cash-hungry capitalist pigs to sell you the idea that your life will be for nothing unless you buy Pro Resistance Storm 4.

Admittedly that wasn’t much of a paraphrasing. That’s because I’m in a mood brought on by certain unmentionable happenings that I cannot mention. Look, it’s going to be full of high-def video content, reviews, news, and all that stuff. As long as it’s not set out like the OPM, then it will probably be pretty good.

But remember, it’ll cost more than TSA and it won’t be funny. Remember that when we’re dead.

Noway I'll be paying for this, at least most third party games are on Xbox 360 aswell so I'll just wait for the demos to appear on that.

Meh - this was always going to happen with a free online service - its the same as services like last.fm, offering you premium content if you subscribe. I'm sure there will be a bunch of things that subscribers get before the rest of us (I'm not interested in services like this), but I'm not too fussed either - if the content is crapola then the public will vote with its thumbs.

I'm getting fed up with Sony's continuing endeavours to add content using different services. They should all be accessed under one roof.
