It's been rumored for a wee while now that Nintendo are planning on releasing an update to the DS Lite, but possibly not until sales start to fall which could a while off yet.

Anyone think we'll see a re-imaging of the DS Lite this side of Christmas, or at all? Plus the rumors state that they would most likely get rid of the GBA slot. Surely this would mean a new version of GH would have to be released for the DS?

I'd rather just stick with my Lite to be honest, and this is coming from a regular Game Boy Micro user!

The Lite is the perfect DS, making it smaller will probably mean taking out GBA functionality (Which given the success of Guitar Hero On Tour they certainly don't need to) and the screens can't get any smaller without the touch screen functionality in games going a bit odd.

The Lite is a great handheld that doesn't need an overhaul. I just wish it could play Game Boy/Game Boy Color games

I don't think the DS needs another re-design. The GBA slot wouldn't be removed since there are some add-ons, such as the Guitar Hero grip and the vibration pack, that need it.

I think there needs to be a better release schedule before Nintendo even consider a re-design.

DS Lite is fine as it is. Cant think of many features that would make me buy an updated version. Mini-Hard Drive with ability to sotre Virtual Console games on it maybe

I think its more likely a whole new machine will be announced for release maybe for Christmas 2010. It will be a DS 2.0 with OLED multi touch screen and maybe be a tad more powerful than an Xbox. I'm hoping that it has more memory than just all out power though as Xbox quality graphics would be fine for a handheld and more memory just gives developers more scope to create within those boundaries.

I see there is no need to redesign DS at all. DS to DS Lite was perfect enough, it handles comfortably, and plays GBA/DS games very well, especially how it looks smoother.

I read that to say you were sick of your DS Lite

I don't think we need a new DS, that being said I look forward to the DS2 as I'm hoping it'll be powerful enough for an N64 emulator. GoldenEye on the go? Image

i think the current DS is fine. Only thing i think it needs is some on board memory or a SD card slot or something so you can store demos and dlc on it like the psp. Then it would be perfect.

I dont think they can take out the gba slot as there are games like guitar hero that need it and this would fragment the user base massively!

Nintendo were slightly stung by the GB Micro, which didn't do particularly brilliantly in sales, so I think they'll be hesitant to rush into another 2nd redesign.

They will probably just have a DS 2.0 instead for having a design update for the DS Lite.

I thought that was because they released it at the same time as the DS (well nearly). That third pillar stuff wasn't really going to hold as not everyone would want 2 handhelds, especially as the DS played GBA games.

DS love has started to fade since the turn of the year. A new surge of games or a sequel is needed over the next 2 years, thats for sure.

Back in business after a lengthy absence from gaming and Grcade.
Recently got myself a PS4 with FIFA15, TLOU, DriveClub and MW:AW.

Nope, a new DS is not necessary. Despite Square-Enix's excellent line-up the DS is relatively barren atm. All thats necessary is some good new 3rd party games imo.

The only thing about the DS lite that annoys me is that you can't change the brightness during the game, psp style. It's not enough to warrant a new DS though- there's no real need to.

The hardware is fine; what it needs is some now software. Hopefully Nintendo will get their act together and give us New Super Mario Bros. 2, a new 2D Metroid and get the other two Layton games translated to English.

Really New figures out for Europe that is that its the DS that have pushed sales up more than anything. Japan really is the only Market that has seen a large drop off by the DS really.

They would be silly to release another redesign it would fragment the market, i think a new DS is defeinitely in development. The DS is still selling fantastically well really why they need to change anything is beyond me, Its coming up to its 4 years this November no reason why it cant be around for at least another year or 2.

I'd say we see the successor showing E3/Leipzig 2010 for Xmas 2011 Release. That gives developers 2more years to develop the crap out of it and Nintendo 2 years to create a games medium that is theirs and attempt to stem future priacy. Also to have something like Peter said on Xbox quality. I mean Ram Now is stupidly cheap as is storage they should be able to do it pretty well really.

The Micro's problem is it was out far too late. The DS was already out and selling well by the time the Micro hit the shops. Given that the DS played all it's games and more besides, it was a no brainer to get the DS.

Right now, a cheaper DS without GBA compatability would definitely be a boon overall to the market, though the Guitar Hero developers would probably get pissed off. There's no shortage of Lites in the supply chain I assume, so it's not like that machine'll vanish anytime soon for people who need slot 2, but a lower price could make the DS an even more ubiquitous handheld.

I'm proper hardcore me: I've still got my launch DS.

Sure it was rushed out to usurp the PSP and looks a bit ugly, but GBA carts (or my rumble pack) sit flush with the front, it has a superior D-pad to the Lite and it's larger size suits my long fingers.

It f#cking rocks I tell thee.

So far this year, I have eaten NO mince pies.
