In the next few months I'm going to look at getting a new laptop.

Not fussed about playing games on it at all... just looking for something with decent memory and good CPU speed to do my uni work on and view youtube videos.

What would you guys recommend for this price bracket? Maybe I could get something for less?

When exactly are you going to buy it? The world of computers moves pretty fast, prices are always coming down. When you've got the dosh and you're going to pull the trigger, post then.

Good places to look are the Dell Outlet site and Ebuyer. Although I did see this on Argos, which is a pretty decent computer.

I thought Acer were meant to be gooseberry fool.

Anyway, I guess anytime now... what's the best gooseberry fool available for my cash now?

Acer have acutally become one of the leading manufacturers of laptops. I've got an Acer Revo Nettop and it's bloody excellent. Besides, when it comes to laptops you should look at the spec first and the name second. Especially, if you're on a budget.

As for what is the best available right now, to be honest with you most laptops will comfortably do what you require. Are you bothered about battery life, portability, watching hi-def videos?

As DM says, most laptops these days will do what you want.

I've got a Vaio at the moment. It's very nice, plays games admirably and didn't cost too much.

If you go to sonystyle and customise their laptops they always have like a free component every week, so obviously you should wait until it's a week with an upgrade you wanted anyway - I got my graphics card for free, which is usually £50 extra.

On top of that I got a 10% off voucher which helped an awful lot too. Ended up being about £100 quid off the laptop, I think, but sadly it's expired.

After selling my old MacBook I managed to get a brand spanking new Vaio for about £100. Those Macs keep have high resale value. 8-)

Some things to consider there. Cheers Harry.

DM, battery life is important to me.

Acer are one of the leading laptop manufacturers because they sell gooseberry fool, cheaply. Avoid them unless you like eating poop.

Oh, also, in my family we've owned 2 HPs, both developed hardware faults long before they should have. I've also seen a lot of my friends ones have similar problems.

It's a shame because they look quite nice and often have a decent spec, but I'm never going near one again.

Dell or ASUS should be the standard reply in any laptop topic.

Actually, if you look at failure rates, HP fare worst. Guess what? I have a HP laptop. Have you actually got any proof of this, or is it purely anecdotal?

Best build quality I've seen for laptop is probably Lenovo.

Lenovo bought IBM's thinkpad division, right? Damn fine machines.

Still look roughly the same as they did 15 years ago though.

I've never ever heard of Lenovo but found a better laptop for me than the one posted above, mainly it has a bigger screen size and a dual core processor for £380. But my brother swears by Dell (he works with computers, 3 time MVP winner from Microsoft 8-) ) - but the one I've had is gooseberry fool so I'm tempted by this Lenovo. Good reviews but I'm skeptical of a company I've never heard of

I don't know if Lenevo equates exactly to the IBM operation they bought out, but both have very good reputations anyway, I would consider one strongly.

I've had mixed experiences with laptops. I had a cheap cheerful toshiba that was good for 2 yrs till hard drive failed but quick replacement and it was good as new.

I had a dell which lasted approx 14 months until the graphics card melted from overheating. I was told to replace it would need new motherboard too, so cost of repair was 70% cost of the laptop. It was bulky ugly and felt cheap, plus it ran stupidly hot without warning. Wouldn't touch another dell after that.

Most recently got a HP, much sleeker, better battery life and generally better. Bar the odd quirk it's still going fine 4 years on. Barely use it now though since I got iPad for my browsing. Just use it for photo editing every now and then.

I've had an urge to buy a new PC though I'm thinking desktop now as iPad fits my portable needs. Even though I know I'll barely use it I want a powerful desktop gaming pc.

What would £1000 get me these days?

Better than anything Dell can build.
