Then that itself is a mistake. Why has the game given my player character a family, if it doesn't make you give a gooseberry fool? Vesemir in the Witcher is your mentor and father-figure, and the game gives you a reason to care for him, both you yourself and Geralt. Depending on how you play the game, Triss is a sister figure and again, the game makes you as a player and as a roleplayer care for her.

Why does Andromeda give you relations if it's not going to explore that? Why not just make the PC be Pathfinder from the off, or have a random NPC be the one to sacrifice themself?

Everything Ive seen of it the characters swerve from either freakishly creepy or comically hideous as far as their animation, acting and writing goes. Based on my extensive experience of the previous ME's, talking to people is basically the primary activity, and how can you engage with that when the fundementals are so far out of whack?

As someone who was an avid fan of DA:O and who preordered DA2, this looks and feels like the exact same thing. A total mess shat out by some half arsing B-team.

From what is nominally the same studio who made KotOR, BG, DA:O, ME1&2.. Shame.

I'm not normally one for wanting a game to be panned by the critics but I truly hope this one does. Sure we've only seen snippets but I just cannot understand how this was allowed to be put out the way it has. Like Flasey mentioned, they were putting out classic after classic at one point and now? Eesh.

Of course this will be getting 8's & 9's across the board, sell really well and mediocrity will remain supreme.

I'm saying it doesn't expect you to give a gooseberry fool during the intro based on their brief introductions, not that the characters themselves are worthless, because I can't determine that at this point in the game. I don't know if the game will provide further context or explore your family because I'm only 90 minutes in.

As for the second question:
One of the key plot points at this time is that Ryder isn't supposed to be the Pathfinder at all. He was not the next in line, he's not some "chosen one" (or even a particularly outstanding soldier), and he's not especially jazzed about it. There would be no real reason for any other character to sacrifice themselves for Ryder other than out of instinctive paternal duty, and it is through the sacrifice that his new responsibility is inadvertently passed to him.

I haven't looked too closely at the videos and previews for this... but is it *really* awful? Sure, some of the characters look a little wooden but, in the big scheme of things, it seems pretty minor. I've watched a couple of clips and the exploration and fighting looks cool. Mass Effect 1, 2 and even 3 (bar the ending controvesy) were regarded as being good games so I'd be surprised if this is a massive step backwards.

Maybe I'm giving a "free pass" to Bioware?

Yeah, sometimes the characters do look a bit derpy and some of the lines are a tad tired. But, I dunno... it seems that a few GIFS are being shared and the internet (not here, of course :datass: ) is suddenly all "OMG! Andromeda is the worst ever!!11?!!".

As I say, I could be wrong as I haven't read (or watched) *that* much of the game beyond a few clips. I still like the sound of the game and I'll be interested to see what the general reviewing consensus is (i.e. excluding the extremes at both ends).

The best way to describe it is that it looks like the kind of thing you'd produce after seeing a few youtube tutorials for blender or maya or something and having a crack. It is ostensibly animation, but its not exactly something you'd import into the gold build of a $$millions AAA video game - in good conscience at least.

The thing to remember is that most of the footage and gifs and stills which looked concerning before the release were shared by Bioware themselves. Remember that they shared the footage in the first place and so they simply must have chosen the bits they thought were the golden highlights, the best bits. Why would you do trailers and gooseberry fool if you werent trying to paint your product in a positive light?

Now think, if that is what Bioware themselves thought were the best bits - what does that say of the rest?

I think the adage is that you never see a bad trailer. But if even the trailers here featured such glaring WTF'ness (the asari jumping thing, the ryder gun thing, the faces, etc etc) - then maybe, maybe, the overall product is going to display such overall lack of care and interest.

And what do you know. People are looking at the product now in their early access and are reporting just such a collection of strawberry float ups.

I think part of it is that you haven't played the first two. 2 especially was incredibly well written and performed. I can't say many video games have me invested in story and character but playing ME2 at the time was a revelation.

To see how bland the characters look now, to hear how bad the voice acting is, it just isn't acceptable for a franchise of this magnitude.

You could well be right, Falsey... but, considering that the Mass Effect series is held in pretty high regard (even if some folk are still sore about the Mass Effect 3 "controversy"), it would be surprising if this arrived as a heap of junk. Again, perhaps I'm being a little soft on Bioware, but it just feels like this is an example of the internet trend for slating major games. Yeah, there could be some silly bits, but I feel hopeful that the gameplay is gonna be fun.

It's a good thing that games ae being held to such high standards and that feedback is open and vocal - and, yes, games are so expensive to buy! - but I grew up with so many really bad-looking games that most big games today all seem to look amazing. Maybe it's me and not you :-).

See, that is an exact example of what I was suggesting, Taf; some folk are spending time producing out-of-context clips to make the game appear dreadful. The graphics may be fatastically aligned with the character's speech in the game but it has been turned into another "Andromeda is terrible - look at this11!!!?!" clip.

It may be truly accurate, of course - I guess we'll see once the reviews arrive!

These are actually making me want to play it now.

Jawa, in all likelihood it'll be a 7/10, average action RPG. But strawberry float, some of these clips are amazing.

Isn't this made by a different team to those that made the previous 3? If so it could be a reason as to why it doesn't seem to be as good as they were on initial impressions.

Before there was even much footage people were really down on this. Looks bland, barren etc, yet looking very much a Mass Effect game. Seems like people don't want this to be like the others for some reason.

I'm looking forward to the story and exploring the nooks and crannies of different planets and cities, not sitting analyzing lip synching and how folk walk. Strange time we live in :slol:

The frame rate of this (XB1) is really putting me off buying the game

That's a really odd thing to say. People are complaining about the awful animations and terrible dialogue. Although the original Mass Effect games were never super smooth for the time their animations were adequate. The writing was always, if not top notch, then very good too. If anything the dodgy animations and rubbish writing IS different from the other games if you take into account in the context the original games found themselves in.
