Those names are Twitter accounts, you need to link your Twitter account to your Miitomo account then follow the relevant people. If/when they follow you back they'll appear in your list of Suggested Friends and you can send them a request.

I linked it and it didn't, anything you link to Facebook you have to give permission to do anything and even if it does you can select the groups you share to so you can set to "private" only then no one is going to see it even if it did post it.

It was a cool diversion but unlike, say, Tomodachi Life or Animal Crossing, there is no real catch to hook people in for the long term. It's funny for a while but there is no depth.
It made lots of people on phones and tablets (re)aware of the Nintendo brand, though, so I guess Nintendo is happy with that.
