As a Club Nintendo member with lots of old products registered and plenty of stuff bought on the Stars Catalogue (RIP in Peace) but who doesn't own a current Nintendo console, is there any point to me signing up to this? Can I even do so? I'm thinking if I end up buying an NX and there's legacy tied to my old account I'd like to do that but I don't even know if it's possible.

You can sign up using your NNID, if you have one. Before Club Nintendo closed there was a chance to connect that to your NNID, so the legacy can possibly remain unbroken.

Considering My Nintendo will work with Nintendo mobile games, and you can points for preregistering interest in miitomo, then you may as well?

Fair enough. I'll look into this, then.

I registered in preparation of the NX (which my gut feeling is it will be a return to form).
There is an area you fill which is Nickname. Is it too much to hope that this will be a username? Actually, considering the problem of all the names being taken on XBL & PSN it would be best if it was like Steam where you register an account and can select your display name.

I'm interested, the only way in which Wii U isn't 'on form' for Nintendo is that its not sold very well.

Why would you care about that really? If you think there is an issue with the games available for the console then you are mistaken.

Yup, it has some of the best games they've ever made on it! If that's not "on form" I have no idea what is.

I'm guessing people won't agree with me when I say this, in terms of output, it's my favourite Nintendo console since the SNES. And Nintendo have pretty much carried it on its own.

Such a shame it has sold like shite on a stick.

I've said it before... the U is a cult machine and I can see the games becoming popular for collectors in the future. There is certainly a lot of dross around, but a little bit of digging unveils a kaleidoscope of gems :-).

Yep, I can see this - Nintendo stuff holds its price, and cult machines are worth more, so a combination of the two (as while some have been less popular, no Nintendo home console could be reasonably called a 'cult machine' in the same way as the U) means M£GABUCK$.

Squinty wrote:Nintendo have pretty much carried it on its own. Such a shame it has sold like shite on a stick.

This is both Nintendo's strength and weakness, though. Their software output I'm sure has been superb, but their approach to selling the thing has been awful. In hindsight, the Wii U was never going to succeed: too expensive to be a justifiable second machine; not distinguishable enough from Wii 1 to tap into its market; barely advertised to general public. And they can't rely on the support of lifelong fans as much, simply because the market is so saturated now: whereas in the days of the N64 and GC, poor sales would be backed up by former child fans of earlier Ninty consoles who wouldn't need advertising to, these days those same former obsessives can see their fixes fulfilled elsewhere. Do you spend £300 on a Wii U and a selection of its best titles, or do you spend that same amount on 80 360 games in CEX, or 5,000+ games on Steam?

I am aware there is a lot of love for the Wii U! Yeah it didn't resonate with the mass market - but why? It was criticised for having a spec comparable to PS3 and 360 just when the PS4 & XBO were around the corner. Because of this it didn't receive widespread third-party support and it didn't have the online features expected of a modern console. It's one killer game that was a bonafide system-seller, Mario Kart Wii U, wasn't launched until a year and a half later. This doesn't mean the console didn't deliver in the fun department, this is not me slating it but I'm just explaining why it will not be regarded as a great all round Nintendo Console of the modern era such as the N64 or 3DS or early Wii, why it wasn't Nintendo 'on form' and at their best.

We know nothing of the NX but the vibe is that Nintendo have studied what has happened with the Wii U and are determined to make a great console that it is innovative in hardware and features, unique Nintendo titles and third party support, killer apps at launch, will be portable and work at home, have appeal in the West and the Far East. We have to wait to see if the rumours are true but if they are then THAT'S why I think the Nintendo NX will be a return to form and earn its place in the pantheon of classic consoles! :D

Nintendo could make one of the most powerful consoles on the market and they wouldn't get mass spread third party support.

Look at the Gamecube.

I don't think that is why the system didn't sell, its not the entire story as to why 3rd Party support dried up either and to say it doesn't have online features expected of a modern console is just plain wrong.

Its got plenty of 'killer' games and Mario Kart coming 18 months into the consoles life had little to do with its sales and isn't particularly late.

The N64 comes from a completely different era, its not really a valid comparison to make. While I like my 3DS it doesn't stand up to either the DS or the GBA so is a bit of a strange example to include as an 'on form' Nintendo console as you see it.

If you are talking purely about games and compare the Wii U to the Wii, I don't think many here would pick the Wii over the Wii U's games lineup.

If anything the Wii U is a kind of throw back to closer to the N64 era, you've got a smaller number of high quality exclusive titles with not much else to shout about. Whereas a console like the Wii, mostly by the nature of its massive install base had a much more scatter shot lineup, 100s or even 1000s of games of vastly different quality levels. Its easy to see why in the future the Wii U might well be classed as Nintendo being more 'on form' than they were with the Wii.

You share some reasonable opinions, but there comes a point when it's best we acknowledge that you say 'tomato' and I say 'tomato.' ;)

So I can't create an NNID without a Wii U or 3DS

Without an NNID the legacy part of my Club Nintendo account (assuming there is such a thing) isn't carried over as I can't use an NNID to register for a Nintendo Account

Meaning I'll essentially be a new customer

:(

If you haven't already linked your Club Nintendo account to an NNID then I'm pretty sure it's already too late to do that anyway.

The Miimoto app is out now in Japan. You can download it now but you can't lie your UK account to it http://www.nintendolife.com/news/2016/0 ... nd_android

I take it the nickname doesn't have to be unique? Either that or I got extremely lucky with being able to get my first name registered.

Username and nickname are separate on Nintendo stuff. The nickname is usually the name given to your Mii.

"It should be common sense to just accept the message Nintendo are sending out through their actions."
