Maybe, Skippy... although I feel that it is unlikely that a twin console / handheld device would be financially viable. The handheld would need to have the tech guts to power both aspects? In which case, the main console would effectively be a docking bay.
I wonder if Nintendo will leave backwards compatibility behind this time. It creates technical barriers and adds to the cost - I could see Nintendo making the break by launching something completely new and leaving the U standing as a unique, short-lived prodigy.

Hyrule Warriors was a collaboration between Koei and Nintendo with the game published on the U... I don't see that as indicating Nintendo has become a third party. The Dragon Swap game is the same situation albeit 3DS.
