Nintendo have a gold mine of nostalgic brand recognition to tap into. I really think part of their problem has been the needless rebrandings (and I would argue the Wii and the DS were successful in spite of their bad names). Their new home console should be the Ultra Nintendo Entertainment System (or Ultra Famicom in Japan, naturally) and their new handheld offering should be the Game Boy 3D.

I think that it's been long enough to just use Nintendo Entertainment System again. Game Boy 3D does sound like a great way to avoid adding further confusion to the DS family line. DS to 3DS wasn't bad but 2DS and New 3DS really muddied the waters. That being said, I can see something like the Nintendo Home Entertainment System and Nintendo Portable Entertainment System being used to distinguish the difference between the devices but create an idea of unity between them which seems to be the basis of the NX platforms.

I kinda like that idea; but I'd hate it if Nintendo went down the Xbox "One" / HTC "one" route - I'm not a fan of those names.

Maybe just "Nintendo Game System"?

Nintendo X. It is so good we erased a few consoles from our history to fit it in.

The patent, spotted by NeoGAF user Rosti, shows a rough schematic of a console that, according to the patent filing's abstract, "is not provided with an optical disk drive" for reading game data from a disc.

On 21 February, I saw the future.

Is Nintendo going where MS feared to tread? Up until a year ago I would have baulked at the thought of digital-only, but having now enjoyed disc-less gaming I am a bit of a supporter of the idea. Digital pricing, though :dread: .

No disks and...
[...], it's stated that this stationary game apparatus doesn't come with a built-in screen and needs to be connected to a TV to display images. So it's definitely a game console in the traditional sense, not some kind of hybrid.

Of course this is just a patent, not a guarantee that the NX will be like this.

So what's new that they have supposedly patented here?

The story says a game console with digitally distributed games but I'd find it hard to believe they'd get a patent for that.

Digital only :fp: that worked so well with the PSP Go.

So that's £50 per game which will probably be locked to the console bought on.

The patent actually quite specifically mentions a console / "game apparatus" with an optical drive, too.

The game apparatus 1 according to the present example embodiment has a compatibility with another game apparatus on which an optical disk drive capable of reading out a game program from an optical disk is mounted. In other words, it is possible for the game apparatus 1 according to the present example embodiment to execute the same game program as another game apparatus on which an optical disk drive is mounted. The same interface as that of the optical disk drive mounted on another compatible game apparatus is employed for the interface of the internal HDD 13 in the game apparatus 1 according to the present example embodiment.

Although its anyone's guess what that means in practice. Perhaps we're about to see the NX become a suite of different configurations (some digital only) instead of just the two handheld / home console versions people are expecting.

Except that seems to not be the case at all...

Furthermore, it appears that the console's controller will include its own "display unit", ala the screen on the Wii U GamePad.

Refining the Wii U could be a very good thing. I really like the gamepad.

I just want it to sell well so that we get more of Nintendo's classics! The Wii U, whilst hosting a decent number of games, just doesn't have enough top games.

It's only really a concern for people who don't have another platform to play the multiplatform titles its missing.

If you compare exclusives across platforms, the Wii U actually comes out pretty well.
