PostNew Phone?
by Tragic Magic » Tue Aug 28, 2018 7:55 am

My 5 year old Nexus 4 has completely given up the ghost so I need to buy a replacement phone asap. But I have no idea what's good or bad in the phone world as it interests me little. All I know is I want to stick with Android so I was hoping you good people would be able to recommend me something?

Imagine thinking a £469 phone was on a budget.

I've recently got a Samsung S8 and I love it, was about £400 off Amazon.

In 2018 it is unfortunately true. It's less than half the price of an iPhone X.

Given TM paid £280 in 2012 for a Nexus 4 and made it last almost 6 years, going too cheap today will probably mean the phone doesn't age as well.

Well you can get a Nokia 8110 for £70, but it's not going to have the features of a more expensive (and yet still relatively cheap) handset.

Second hand Galaxy S8. Probably set you back £350ish and its a cracking phone.

(as an aside, I've bought from these guys several times and they're always great)

There's a big difference between £70 and £470, and there are plenty of capable phones in that bracket. That's why I asked for Tragic's budget. If he's happy to spend almost £500 they great, the OnePlus 6 is a decent phone. If he only has £200 or £300 then I could recommend something in that price range.

Is it £400?

I think it's £400.

Ultimately I blame Tragic here for not providing a budget for us to make recommendations.

Thanks so much so far, guys.

I like to get the best if I can, or at least as close to it as possible but I really don't want to spend money at the minute so I think this One Plus 6 is going to be my limit.

What kind of phones are in the £200-£300 range? I suppose if whatever I get is better than a Nexus 4 then I won't know any better regarding Samsung Galaxy God tier phones.

If you are prepared to import, you have some good options with Xiaomi. As I mentioned earlier, Poco F1 is new on the market. This is in your price range and has the latest Snapdragon processor. Not going to have the same premium feel as the flagship phones but will match them for performance.

If you can stretch to £368 and are OK with importing, OnePlus 6 can be yours...

The Moto 6 Plus is probably the best of the upper-budget mobiles. It's no frills, but it's pretty capable in almost every department.

Nokia 8 is a great flagship which has been pretty heavily discounted due to lack of sales. It's currently 259.99 at Very. EDIT - Also at John Lewis in both colours.

Personally I'd avoid second hand phones and last year's models due to concerns over longevity, but those are also options if you're looking to cut costs.

Interesting, my Moto G5 is starting to have a few issues (e.g. not always recognising SD card and the lock button not always working 1st time). Nokia 8 seems like a genuine upgrade for a reasonable price.

OnePlus 3 for £144.40 with code MOAQSEOD. Not the latest, but good for the money and is getting Android Pie.

Having mentioned it earlier in the thread, I'm half tempted to buy one of those "feature phone" Nokia 8110s as a backup should my S8 ever die unexpectedly. Stick a PAYG sim in it and I've got a burner phone just like all those spies in the movies 8-)

Don't you have any old phones? I've got my OPO as backup for my OP5 and a drawer full of old phones.
