There are nice villages and countryside up north. No jobs in those areas, mind.

I used to save like a maniac when me and the wife were just me and the girlfriend. But times moves on and you get married and buy a house and a second car and have a baby and pay for childcare (which is bleeding me dry, it's like a second mortgage) and I've seen my savings slowly wither away into pretty much nothing :(

We're quite fortunate in that both our parents are pretty well off so if the worst happened we'd have support behind us for a while, but day-to-day that doesn't offer much consolation when I can't buy that new pair of shoes for a month or two or we can't afford to go to Peppa Pig World with the sprog.

I mean don't get me wrong, we're not poor and live in a nice new house and generally can afford what we need (but not always what we want) but we feel the strain all the same. It's tough being a grown up, particularly if you're trying to remain as debt-free as you can, it'd be so easy to just get a couple of high-limit credit cards and hammer them to improve our lifestyle, but eventually that debt would ruin our lives so it's not something we consider doing (we do have a credit card, but it's not used regularly).

I also echo the posts earlier in this thread saying that school/college/uni woefully underprepares kids for modern finance issues. I've never used a protractor in my life!
