PostNew shower - Less than 2 months old, has died! Law help!
by JiggerJay » Mon Sep 21, 2009 4:56 pm

Basically my dad bought a new shower (the brand is "creda") and had it installed, it worked ok for about 2 months then all of a sudden the "power" light wouldn't turn on, and in turn wouldn't heat up the water.

First we called up B&Q and told them that we had an independant builder come over and pratically tell us is strawberry floated, and they told us to get in touch with creda (I though they had some kind of legal obligation to return faulty items within a set period say 90 days?)

So anyway we get in touch with Creda who tell my dad that he'll have to pay for a part and an engineer to come round to fit it, my dad counters with the fact that it's barely 60 days old, and we registered it to benifit from 2 years guarentee!

They try convincing my dad that the problem has occured due to a water power fluctuation which is down to the water board rather than the shower itself? and that his guarentee doesn't cover a safety feature breakdown

Now I am no Law student but this does sound like complete bollocks to me, I have had a look at some random peices of literature and I can't seem to find anything relevent, I tried reading through the sales of goods act 1979 but I cant seem to make heads or tails of it.

Anyone got any ideas of some legal mumble jumble to put in my dads complaint letter?

Of course any correspondance will be greatly appreciated!

Maybe now you'll learn that shower heads aren't meant to go up there!

A reasonable amount of time is generally 28 days, not 3 months. If it has been caused by a fluctuation in the water then it is indeed not covered, cant your your water supplier? And if it is faulty get B&Q to sort it out for you. Generally they have to deal with it as you bought it from them. T&C do sometimes differ though

That fluctuation in water sounds like BS to me. Check the specification literature that came with it and find the maximum pressure input it can take.

Off the top of my head i cant remember what the max pressure is in the water main, but call your water board and ask them.

I should imagine that them shower max input pressure will be alot higher than what the water board say.

I suppose it might be useful to contact the water supplier anyway and ask about water pressure fluctuations and pressure levels in your area - just to prove that the shower company are talking gooseberry fool.

What is the model number?

For some reason I read the title as "My 2 month old has died! Law help!"

I did a  IRL.

No I don't have anything to offer to this thread. :(

Random pieces of literature won't help you, I suggest looking at books relevant to what you want to find out about.

Looking at the manual for

http://www.creda-showers.co.uk/shower-range/creda_electric_showers/creda_family_showering_range/creda_aquawave_electric_shower

Suggests that the operating water pressure range is between 0.7 and 10 bar. It also says there is a temp cut out for if it goes below 0.7 bar.

Its very unlikely your pressure has gone above 10 bar.

Looking about the internet suggests mains pressure should be around 2 to 5 bar, with a minimum of 1 bar.

http://www.heatweb.com/techtips/mains.html

Do you have low water pressure in your house? or does it fluctuate?

That manual says this safety cut out is goverened by a pressure switch. It is perhaps possible that this switch has become faulty and wont acknowledge a higher pressure and therefore wont heat the water.

Contact united utilities and ask for some maximum and minimum water pressure data in your area. Then contact the manufacturer and tell them that your water supplier is good for pressure and that If they suspect it is a pressure fluctuation, and UU say the pressure is good, then you suspect the pressure safety switch is faulty and they should replace it under thre warranty.

But the water pressure safety switch may not be the problem. It could be another faulty part. But if you can tell them that your water pressure is good then they cant come back to you on that.

Cheers for the info and advice Mcj, I will pass it on to my dad to look at as this is mainly his situation! In regards to the actual pressure I have no idea without getting a professional involved!

Any product that breaks after such a short period of time should be repaired or replaced without charge. Go to Trading Standards or a CAB, since they know their stuff better than a gaming forum.
