After years in the planning and demolition of the former building The Shard of Glass is finally under construction in London. I think it looks fantastic and will be one of the worlds best buildings when complete in 2012.

Sorry for the size of the image but it's just such a nice picture I felt I had to use it.

I love architecture and Skyscrapers can be a beautiful addition to any city but I can also see why some people may think such a tall building may not fit in with London's historic buildings. London also has a few other projects going up at the moment (Visit this site for info on other projects.) and it annoys me that more publicity is not given to the fact in these troubled economic times.

So, what buildings are you looking forward to?

I love London Bridge area. There is a fantastic hotel there called The London Bridge hotel and there is also an amazing railway station called London Bridge Station. Inside that station there is an M&S and a Krispy Kreme. In a strawberry floating station!

What? It's a massive Skyscraper that is made to look like a single huge piece of glass I'm not sure how you can call that bland.

Also another skyscraper called the Pinnacle is starting construction soon and should be up before the shard by around 2011...

It just looks like any other glass skyscraper to me and not particularly interesting looking.

That Pinnacle Tower however, does.

I don't know. It's a big city and they've got lots of investment? They're being planned for construction along the waterfront over the next couple of decades apparently.

I don't like skyscrapers, I never have done. They're just asking for trouble and I thought this before 9/11.

I took these the other week in the Building Centre. It was a huuuge model of central London, showing all the planned development.

I see they are also planning a big development of the docklands around Canary Wharf. I hope they do all get built London just frankly looks shite in the skyline department compared to many other cities. Places like Frankfurt and even Madrid have been building high for a few yrs now.

What brilliant timing. Just what's needed right now. When the economy is strawberry floated, just keep on spending.

I think it looks fantastic, it looks like a building from WipEout HD!

I like the Nina Tower. The angle with the water over the rocks makes it look as though it's on a cliff edge. In JURASSIC PARK. Or something.

I hate modern buildings in London, it's all glass and funny shapes, nothing like the old style buildings that actually make up London.

London's a patchwork of many different architectural eras, this is just the latest and it certainly won't be the last (well, unless sea levels rise, drowning the place). Personally I'd rather someone be allowed to come along with a view to redeveloping all of London that can be redeveloped, and actually be get to do so without being hampered by stupid councillors or whatever - so many have wanted to do this, but only a tiny part of the vision has ever been achieved. St. Paul's cathedral was the centrepiece of Christopher Wren's new London, certain areas of high rise flats were part of another vision, and that nice Canary Wharf was but another.
